I was going to post my thoughts on the whole Crowdstrike incident but decided to wait till today to give most of my sysadmin and security friends a time to focus over the weekend while they recovered from this mess. DSPM and Data Strategy Lots of people are talking about data security posture management (DSPM). DSPM encompasses a range of solutions that previously fell into data governance, data security, compliance, and data risk management categories. All of them focus on protecting "sensitive" data and most specifically reference data in the cloud. A number of vendors are evolving existing products, acquiring needed features, or launching new cloud-based solutions to compete successfully in the new DSPM category. It's all good—and it's a logical evolution of technology to try and cope with escalating threats and complexity. But, it does beg a few questions. What about data that isn't regulated? Or data that isn't typically classified as "sensitive"? For example, more than 90% of data traveling over the network is app-to-app and API-to-API data. This is just as critical as medical or PII or financial data because if it becomes unavailable or compromised, so does everything attached to it. What about Large Language Model (LLM) data destined for AI purposes? How do you know it's maintaining its integrity? DSPM is a set of solutions designed to fix part of a larger problem. We live in a data-first world where everything runs on data. What's your company's strategy for data accountability?
