TESTS SHOWED SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED STOPPING DISTANCES! 👉 One of the most interesting innovations, 10 years ago, was the announcement of the Torricelli Vaccum Emergency Break (VEB) by autoliv. 👉 The patented solution uses a 0.3 m² vacuum plate below the car that starts in 100 millisec and produces, independently from the tire-to-track friction, a downforce of 15 KN. The stopping distances will be reduced, up to 40% on surfaces like wet or dry asphalt, even on ice . 👉 Autoliv has set a maximum speed limit for the activation of the system at 70 kph. 👉 Pedestrian AEB with VEB (autoliv) decreases pedestrian fatalities in collisions with cars by 80-87%, which is an increase of 8-15% over the AEB-only system. Applied to global annual pedestrian fatalities occurring with passenger car involvement, there is a potential of saving up to 24,000 more lives over AEB-only. VEB is not only effective in fatal accidents, collision avoidance increases by an even more impressive 14-28% when VEB is additional in action with the AEB system. 👉 Jeppsson/Lübbe: Study - Simulating Automated Emergency Braking and Torricelli Vacuum Emergency Braking for cyclists came to the results:: A simplified state-of-the art AEB system achieving full score in Euro NCAP was defined to require a Field of View of 75° and activation not before 0.7 s TTC. This “Baseline 75°” system avoided 41% of all accidents, 65% of fatalities and 47% of MAIS2+ injuries. Adding more braking power with “VEB 75°” to the AEB resulted in 18% more avoided accidents and the fatalities and injuries are reduced further by at least 20%. This was achieved with the same activation time and therefore the same False Positive rate as the “Baseline 75°” system. Increased True Positive performance and safety benefits can therefore be achieved without compromising False Positive performance and nuisance activations. 👉 A Problem could be: The autoliv vacuum emergency brake works almost much too good.
