On this #HumanRightsDay, we’re reminding you that a defining characteristic of food apartheid is socio-economic: that is, it is most commonly found in Black, Brown, and low-income communities (where many people don't have cars). Studies have found that wealthy districts have three times as many supermarkets as poor ones and that white neighborhoods contain an average of four times as many supermarkets as predominantly Black ones. Additionally, grocery stores in Black and Brown areas have significantly less selection of fresh foods. Those living in food deserts may also find it difficult to locate foods that are culturally appropriate for them, and dietary restrictions, such as lactose intolerance, gluten allergies, etc., also limit the food choices of those who do not have access to larger chain stores that have more selection. Additionally, studies have found that urban residents who purchase groceries at small neighborhood stores pay between 3-37% more than suburbanites buying the same products at supermarkets. 🍊 Click here to learn more here: https://buff.ly/3OFdY7X . . . Because your food choices can change the world
About us
Food Empowerment Project seeks to create a more just and sustainable world by recognizing the power of one’s food choices. We encourage choices that reflect a more compassionate society by spotlighting the abuse of animals on farms, the depletion of natural resources, unfair working conditions for produce workers, the unavailability of healthy foods in communities of color and low-income areas, and the importance of not purchasing chocolate that comes from the worst forms of child labor.

Bringing your favorite wine to holiday parties this season? Make sure it’s vegan friendly! 🍾 It may come as a surprise to many that part of the winemaking process often involves the use of animal products. At the end of the process, wine is sometimes clarified using a variety of filtering mechanisms. Gelatins (made from animal bones), isinglass (obtained from fish bladders), and egg albumin are some of the most common filters in use today. 🍇 Read more here: https://buff.ly/2YK2iGn . . . Call to action by @blklivesmatter 📣 Petition states, “President Biden is willing to save his son, but now he needs to use that same power to save the people sitting in federal prison and those facing the death penalty right now. This is the absolute minimum that President Biden must do before he leaves office. Add your name now to call on Biden to save the millions trapped in prison for non-violent offenses right now. He must grant that same clemency he gave his son to those he does not know.” Sign the petition here: https://buff.ly/3ZDcUsV

Protect the right to organize! Take action with Athena Coalition. Sign the petition linked our bio. 📣 Repost @athenaforall: Want to preserve a pro-worker majority at the National Labor Relations Board? President Biden nominated the chair for a new term, but Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer still hasn’t scheduled a confirmation vote. If the seat stays open, the board will swing to a corporate-friendly majority next year. That’s exactly what Amazon and other corporations want — and we can’t let it happen: buff.ly/3ZECug3 . . . As we learn more, we have become concerned about the accuracy of labels that come from Western entities and are placed on commodities produced in the Global South. Due to the absence of truly being able to verify this information in the realm of Fair Trade, navigating this terrain with confidence becomes slightly more difficult. Unfortunately, we cannot provide a statement that we fully trust Fair Trade. Learn more about the issues within fair-trade chocolate and coffee here: https://buff.ly/2RT0DMW
