#FOODBIOMES at the Bio3-2024 forum, organised by #BioInnovation Greece at Technopolis Gazi, Athens, on September 1-5, 2024 Representing FOODBIOMES, Ioanna Prapa, alongside George Paraskevakos and Méryl Massot from Zoefarma, gave a talk on "Probiotic Biobanks and the Case for Disease Prevention" in the 8th session of the conference, titled "Developing Biobanks to Understand Human Diseases. The presentation was focused on the findings of a study on novel strains isolated from olive samples collected in Monemvasia, Peloponnese, Greece, that was conducted at the FOODBIOMES facilities. After identification at species level, the new strains were evaluated for their potential health-promoting properties through a series of in vitro assays. The future steps and industrial perspectives were further analyzed and discussed, with an emphasis on the significance of discovering novel probiotic strains with specific activities for the food and pharmaceutical industry. A research infrastructure to explore the impact of microbiome applications in food systems
About us
FOODBIOMES is a new distributed research infrastructure of the Agri-food sector established in Greece aiming to offer world-class research, education and innovation services exploring the impact of microbiome applications in food systems. FOODBIOMES is a partnership consisting of research groups and laboratories from the Democritus University of Thrace, which stands as the Coordinator, the Ionian University, the Aegean University and the University of Ioannina. Going through a three-year preparatory phase, more than 70 researchers and professionals with deep interest in microbiome applications are building the foundations of FOODBIOMES with a vision to create one of the main pillars for the national and international research ecosystem of the Agri-food sector. FOODBIOMES welcomes and embraces collaborative projects and actions within the aspects of the knowledge triangle. If you are representing a research organisation, research infrastructure, business or other institute with expertise or an interest in microbiome research, do not hesitate to contact us. FOODBIOMES at the 17th Panhellenic Congress of Nutrition & Dietetics, Athens, Greece, 8-10 December 2023 👉 Recent advances in our research on functional food ingredients and in particular on herbs and aromatic plants as bioactive substances, on probiotics and gastrointestinal health in diabetes and on the viability of immobilized probiotic cells, were presented by our coordinator Yiannis Kourkoutas, our partner leader Antonios E. Koutelidakis and our researcher Panagiota Potsaki during the first two days of the congress. A poster presentation on a clinical study evaluating the effects of a Lactococcus strain on blood and urine biomarkers was delivered by our researcher Panoraia Bousdouni complementing the active presence of #FOODBIOMES at the congress.
