Around the world, we make grants that support the visionary people and organizations who work to challenge inequality.
About us
The Ford Foundation is a global, grant-making philanthropy that works to disrupt inequality in all its forms. We believe in the inherent dignity of all people. But around the world, too many people are excluded from the political, economic, and social institutions that shape their lives. In addressing this reality, we are guided by a vision of social justice—a world in which all individuals, communities, and peoples work toward the protection and full expression of their human rights; are active participants in the decisions that affect them; share equitably in the knowledge, wealth, and resources of society; and are free to achieve their full potential. Across eight decades, our mission has been to reduce poverty and injustice, strengthen democratic values, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement. We work in 11 regional offices around the world and support programs in more than 50 countries.

Franklin Thomas was an iconic figure at the Ford Foundation and within the world of #philanthropy. He is perhaps best known for being the first African American president of the Ford Foundation, and his life was marked by many such historic firsts. During his early years as a student at Columbia University, he was the first African American to captain an Ivy League basketball team. He served as president of the first community development organization of its kind, the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation. He was a member of countless corporate boards, and a key player in facilitating the end of the apartheid era in South Africa. We have much to learn from his life—and much to do to carry on his legacy. Add his story, in his own words, #AnUnplannedLife, to your reading list this #BlackHistoryMonth. https://lnkd.in/eC8ZPed9

Riding through NYC's streets, platform based delivery drivers like William face harsh conditions, unfair pay practices, and a lack of basic protections. They're essential workers, but often unprotected. Worker's Justice Project fights for better wages, safer conditions, and fair treatment for deliveristas. https://lnkd.in/em_ZUhWV

There are a record number of conflicts around the world—more than at any point since World War II. And invariably, women and girls pay the price, subjected to violence, hunger and displacement. This #BlackHistoryMonth, listen to award-winning playwright, actor and UN Women Goodwill Ambassador Danai Gurira share more about her work including her award-winning 2009 play, Eclipsed, which focused on women during the Second Liberian Civil War. At the Ford Foundation and The Meteor’s #FreeFuture event, she reminded the world that even in conflict zones, all darkness is temporary—or can be. Women leaders are ready to shine the light if the world is ready to let them do so. https://lnkd.in/eZbBEzUW

#MakeItCount: The LA Arts Community Fire Relief Fund Los Angeles’ arts community is one of the most vibrant in the world, with filmmakers, musicians, visual artists, writers, and other creatives who have inspired and entertained millions of people. Last month, in response to the devastating Southern California wildfires, a coalition of major arts organizations and funders united to support artists and arts workers who have been impacted. The LA Arts Community Fire Relief Fund, led by the J. Paul Getty Trust, will provide critical emergency relief to workers in all creative disciplines who have lost their residences, studios, and livelihoods, or have otherwise been affected by the fires. The fund has raised $12 million so far, and participants include the Getty, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Mellon Foundation, the Gagosian Gallery, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw’s Hearthland Foundation, and the Ford Foundation. Impacted artists can apply for a grant at the Center for Cultural Innovation. “This collaborative spirit was instantly activated,” Michael Govan, LACMA’s director and chief executive, told the New York Times. “It is kind of a landmark thing that LA, which is so scattered, is pulling together so quickly. I don’t know that there is a precedent for that.” Ford also provided core support for the LA Fire Department Foundation Emergency Wildfire Fund, which supports Los Angeles firefighters with equipment, tools, and supplies.
