UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP28. IUCN President. Global leader and advocate for climate and nature.

A Week of Impact at COP29 Azerbaijan in Baku. As High-Level Climate Champions, this first week at COP29 has been a powerful demonstration of collaboration, dialogue, and bold action. Together, we are charting a path to a more resilient and sustainable future. Highlights from the week include: ✅ Forest & Climate Leaders' Partnership (FCLP): Moderating the high-level event on forests, I was inspired by the ambitious commitments to protect these vital ecosystems. Forests are indispensable for mitigating climate change and safeguarding biodiversity, and I’m optimistic about the progress we can achieve by COP30. #RaceToZero #2030Breakthroughs ✅ Opening of the #GlobalClimateAction Agenda: This event showcased the vital role of non-state actors in driving climate solutions. In bilateral meetings with the Umbrella Group, Environmental Integrity Group, AILAC, and the European Union, I was encouraged by the confidence expressed in the mandate of the High-Level Champions. This support was reaffirmed during the Agenda's opening, signaling strong alignment across stakeholders. #RaceToResilience #SharmElSheikhAdaptationAgenda#NatureFinance Event: We deepened discussions on scaling investments in nature-based solutions—a cornerstone of climate and biodiversity efforts. Transformative finance is critical to unlocking sustainable outcomes and ensuring progress on global commitments. #2030Breakthroughs #SharmElSheikhAdaptationAgenda#ResilienceHub: Launching its fourth year, the Resilience Hub continues to amplify regional priorities and elevate local solutions. It was an honor to reflect on its impact and highlight the importance of inclusive governance and action. #RaceToResilience #SharmElSheikhAdaptationAgenda Each of these engagements highlights a shared commitment to climate action that is possible, profitable, and popular. The momentum here in Baku is extraordinary, and I’m deeply grateful to witness such a collaborative spirit in tackling the climate crisis. As we enter the second week, let’s continue to champion innovative, inclusive, and transformative solutions. Together, we are building a future where people and nature thrive. #COP29 #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Resilience #NatureFinance

  • It was inspiring to hear from all speakers about the need to strengthen land tenure for IP and LCs at yesterday’s FCLP event. ➡️ On our journey from #COP16 in Cali to #COP29 in Baku towards #COP30 in Belèm and beyond - yesterday’s event was an important step for securing Indigenous Peoples and local communities forest tenure. The aim is to strengthen land tenure security and forest management rights for Indigenous Peoples and other forest-dependent communities in tropical forests. 🌴🌱 ✨️Thank you to all speakers for participating and supporting securing land tenure. #COP29 #ClimateAction #Forests #IP&LC

🌍 Today, at #COP29, we launched an urgent Call to Action to protect the land tenure rights of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in tropical forests and to advance direct financing as we look towards a new financial pledge for IP&LCs. This Call to Action, initiated through the Platform to Support Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in Forest Climate Action - part of the @Forest and Climate Leaders Partnership - brings together governments, donors, and Indigenous Peoples organizations like the Global Alliance of Territorial Communities (GATC) for 4 urgent priorities: 1️⃣ Clear national commitments in NDCs to recognize and protect IP&LCs territories. 2️⃣ Accelerated legal recognition of land tenure rights. 3️⃣ Respect for Indigenous rights and traditional knowledge, including Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC). 4️⃣ Ambitious, transparent, and direct financing designed in collaboration with us - Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities. This collaborative effort builds on the $1.7 billion pledge made at COP26 and sets the stage for ambitious, rights-based climate action. We urge governments, donors, and partners to join us in advancing this Call to Action and securing a sustainable future for Indigenous territories, tropical forests, and the planet. • #COP29 - 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬 🌍 🌳 Our event yesterday at #COP29 in Baku brought together Indigenous leaders, businesses, and environmental advocates to spotlight the need for scaling up #forest finance through high-integrity carbon markets and results-based payments. A coalition of 14 countries issued a collective commitment to significantly ramp up finance for forest carbon, aligning with global #climate goals to curb forest loss and boost forest restoration. 🌿 Forest carbon finance mechanisms, such as results-based payments and carbon credit markets, have become essential tools in fighting deforestation. With foundational infrastructure built over the last decade, jurisdictions are now poised to deliver high-integrity forest carbon credits, meeting global standards under the UNFCCC's REDD+ framework. 🤝 Leaders stressed the critical role of voluntary and compliance markets in mobilising finance at scale. Noteworthy recent agreements include the LEAF Coalition’s purchases deals worth up to USD 135 million collectively with Brazil's Pará, Costa Rica, and Ghana, as well as Ghana's USD 133 million worth of private sector transactions. The statement underscores the need to: 1. Support continued investment in results-based payments for countries fulfilling their REDD+ objectives. 2. Foster demand for high-integrity credits by de-risking private sector participation and highlighting progress in REDD+ programs. 3. Build robust regulatory frameworks in forest countries to ensure the integrity of carbon transactions and support REDD+ implementation. 4. Promote stakeholder inclusion by prioritising #IndigenousPeoples and local communities as partners. 5. Champion pricing for forest carbon credits that values the social and environmental benefits of forests.
