We envision ecologically, economically, and socially responsible forestry as the standard for forest management
About us
The Forest Stewards Guild's mission is to promote ecologically, economically, and socially responsible forestry as a means of sustaining the integrity of forest ecosystems and the human communities dependent upon them. We are a professional organization of forest stewards and affiliates who are passionate about sustaining and restoring the integrity of our forests while meeting the needs of the communities that rely on them. Our members’ work provides tangible examples of forestry that is ecologically, economically, and socially responsible. The common bond of Guild members is a passion for forests and land stewardship. The practice of excellent forestry, promotion of a stewardship ethic, and adherence to our membership principles are the heart and soul of the Guild. Our members practice imaginative silviculture that respects the complexity of natural forests. We value the importance of field observation, experience, science, and continuous learning. We seek opportunities to collaborate, share our knowledge, and learn from others.

🌲 Forests matter—to wildlife, to communities, and to the future. 🌎 A recent article in Manchester Journal highlights the Worcester Range Management Unit Long-Range Plan, which exemplifies climate-resilient forest management across 18,000 acres of Vermont’s forests. With a balanced approach that combines ecological forestry, conservation, and public input, the plan ensures a thriving future for forests and the communities that depend on them. 📖 Read the full article here: https://ow.ly/2rNm50UgSAO #ForestStewardsGuild #ForestManagement #ClimateResilience #ForestsForTheFuture

🔥 Rising Wildfire Risks in the Northeast 🌲 The Northeast is facing increased wildfire risks due to prolonged drought, historical land use patterns, and invasive species, all exacerbated by climate change. With aging forests and low plant diversity—legacies of 19th-century land clearing and reforestation—the region’s landscapes are highly flammable. Recent fires near New York City and New Jersey have also highlighted the threat to densely populated areas. These challenges emphasize the urgent need for collaborative efforts in resilient land and wildfire management. #ClimateChange #WildfireRisk #ForestResilience #SustainableForestry #LandManagement #ForestStewardsGuild

The Forest Stewards Guild and our partners in Maine recently celebrated a milestone in wildfire risk preparedness in the Massabesic region of southern Maine. With the installation of three dry hydrants in Goodwin Mills, Kennebunk, and Hollis, rural fire departments now have safe, rapid, and reliable access to water resources—essential infrastructure in areas without standard fire hydrants. This achievement is part of the larger Massabesic Community Wildfire Protection Planning and Wildfire Risk Reduction effort, supported by Wildfire Risk Reduction funding from the USDA Forest Service. 🌲 Devastating Impact of Hurricane Helene on North Carolina's Forests A recent assessment by the N.C. Forest Service reveals the extensive damage to North Carolina's timberlands caused by Hurricane Helene. With over 822,000 acres impacted and an estimated $214 million in losses, the hardest-hit areas include Buncombe and McDowell counties. Private landowners bear the majority of the damage, highlighting the widespread effects on local communities and forest health. 🌱 New Insights on Non-Native Plant Species Patterns Across the U.S. Recent research from the Rocky Mountain Research Station highlights a significant link between non-native plant species richness and human population density, particularly around greenhouse and nursery locations. This study reveals that areas with higher human populations and greenhouse density tend to have a greater presence of non-native plants, with implications for forest management and ecological resilience. Forests and forest mosaics are especially vulnerable, showing higher non-native species richness compared to other vegetation types. 📊 New Findings on Extreme Wildfire Risk Human-caused climate change and land use changes have significantly increased the likelihood of record-breaking wildfires, as highlighted in the "State of Wildfires 2023–2024" research. This inaugural analysis shows that last summer’s severe, fire-prone conditions in western Amazonia were at least 20 times more likely due to climate change. Record-setting events in Canada and Greece underscore the urgent need for resilience-building through coordinated climate action and sustainable land management.
