  • The inaugural season of Forterra Nature Discovery™ came into focus during a whirlwind brainstorm. Motivated by our collective conviction that nature — our stunning Pacific NW variety in particular — remains inseparable from the quality of our lives. Connecting our supporters, new and familiar, to the special landscapes in our care became the task, but what was revealing was the variety of ways this could happen. Our event topics ranged wildly from nature interpretation and wildlife photography to forest meditation. But the common thread was a hopeful theme: nature enhances our well-being. People signed up for one or more of the 9 different events on a variety of Forterra preserves and parks. At every event friends were made, knowledge was shared, and we recognized the value of stewarding these lands. As the organizer, my takeaway from these events is that faith and hope in the resilience of nature is rewarded with well-being. We are all better off knowing that bats sleep in cozy bundles under the peeling sheets of red alder bark or that the western tanager, bright as a flame, travels yearly from central Mexico and finds the food it needs to thrive in our bug-rich wetlands. Wildlife photographers revel in nature’s drama as they capture—through their lens—fledging birds and the raptors looking for a quick meal. And what about Forest Meditation? This tangle of human and nature was the most popular event. The monks of Clear Mountain Monastery guided us with humor and good will as we entered the forest in a completely new way – taking in the sun, air and sounds and letting our busy minds quiet down. The collective joy of this was strong enough to see us through the 12 or so screaming, playful Girl Scouts we encountered on the trail. Like the birds, they too were part of the landscape. As we look toward 2025, we will keep the momentum with monthly events and add to the variety with experiences like nature journaling through art and writing, wild women hikes and more.  invite you to Join the Journey, and support Forterra’s work to help protect at-risk lands, the wildlife, and communities that depend on us. Warmest wishes,  Dan Murdoch, Sr. Director, Operations Donate >>> https://lnkd.in/g5SYG5P2

  • My grandfather came to the PNW from Norway. My mom learned to love this place from him and when she visited the old country – she understood why he connected so deeply to the Salish Sea, the mountains, and beauty that surround us every day. Growing up, a print of “Midsummer Eve Bonfire” by Nikolai Astrup captivated me. Mom explained how bonfires on summer solstice and a yule log in winter were ways our people connected to each other, to the changing seasons and hope for the future. I am looking forward to my own solstice bonfire, with friends and family – under stars, or rain, or clouds – relishing salty air off Admiralty Inlet tinged with the pitch of nearby firs and madrones. It’s a great reminder of the “why” behind my 30 years with Forterra, and with you, doing what we can to support each other and this place we all love.  As we approach the turning of the seasons, thank you for renewing your support of Forterra’s mission. We’ve got a lot to celebrate and be grateful for, and a great year of work ahead! • When I was a child, I,Swil Kanim, dissected a frog. And it hurt. I'm Lhaqtemish. I'm of the place of frogs. When my parents were passed out, one on the couch and the other on the floor. It was a chorus of frogs that sang for me, a lullaby. When I was a child, I dissected a frog. And it hurt, but oh yes, I got an A for the day. There's a million ways for us to know who we are. I raise my hands in gratitude to the people of Forterra and the people that support Forterra, because they answer that question. We are all of who we are. No matter what they say … to try to divide us, to separate us, to dissect us. We know the value. We know the importance of listening to a frog sing its song in a healthy environment. Hyshque. • We’re so thankful for the generous support of Swire Coca Cola, Alaska Airlines, First Interstate Bank and McKinstry. This fall, we mobilized nearly 100 volunteers to restore green spaces and city parks. The Evergreen Restoration Program makes a significant impact on our local ecosystem. We're incredibly grateful for their partnership.    Join us in 2025 >>> https://lnkd.in/gjE-kzhY #Thankful #Restoration #ForterraNW #NonProfit #ForterraFriday #Community #Conservation
