"We know what a difference cash in the hands of families can make in preventing crises." Wise words from Ann Flagg, who, alongside Rebecca Jones Gaston and Miranda L., shared her expertise on child welfare funding with the Foster America Fiscal Leadership Circle. At our convening in Washington, D.C., this month, our fellows explored innovative ways to fund programs and services that support families—and keep children out of foster care. https://lnkd.in/g-sSYK-j

As a featured guest on the latest episode of the Community In-Site podcast, Foster America team member J. Nicole Morales talks not only about the value of engaging lived experts in child welfare transformation—but how to do so meaningfully, ethically, and equitably. Among her incredibly valuable insights: 1) Start by centering lived experience as an indispensable asset—not just a group of people for consultation. 2) Create spaces for feedback that go beyond the typical survey, questionnaire, or $25 gift card. 3) Invest in building genuine relationships. 4) Be willing to be uncomfortable and flexible. 5) Embrace opportunities to question the longstanding practices that have put up the barriers and prevented relationship building. 🎙️New Episode of Community In-Site Podcast🎙️ Ep. 16 Breaking Old Habits: The Tension and Promise of Shifting We are nearing the end of the first season of Community In-Site and I’m grateful we were able to get time with colleagues in Oregon about their ongoing work. Talking about collaboration with community and valuing it is important, and the work of doing that can also have challenges. Shifting power from traditional systems to the real needs of the community is vital work when we think of the family wellbeing movement. Jennifer Holman is at Oregon Department of Human Services and J. Nicole Morales is at Foster America and I’m grateful for their honesty and care for those they support and serve. I hope as you listen, you can learn from them and would guess many will resonate with what they share in our conversation. Coming soon! The Aviv Foundation is pleased to once again sponsor the Springboard Prize for Child Welfare in 2025. The Springboard Prize is an open call for exciting, early-stage projects with the potential to improve the lives of children and families impacted by the child welfare system. Four awardees will receive $400,000 each to help launch an early-stage initiative, with the potential for additional capacity-building grants and opportunities to network with like-minded partners. We welcome applicants from a wide range of disciplines, even those outside of child welfare (e.g., educators, technologists, health care professionals). Are you or someone you know interested in this opportunity? If so, please sign up for updates at springboardprize.org. We look forward to sharing more updates in the coming months!
