This month’s book was: Resonate by Nancy Duarte. More of a business book than a GovCon one, but I would definitely use these concepts in a potential meeting with a government contact! You’ll see why in a paragraph or two. Initially this month I’d actually planned to read a different book. I get as many books as possible from our local library system and the original book had a couple of copies, all on hold. I had in my notes that anything by Nancy Duarte was a good choice and with one of her books available, it seemed like a great choice. I was a little worried about Slideology, her more famous book, not being available, but this book is sort of a prequel to it! And the timing could not have been better! Resonate really helped me reframe how I was looking at a couple of FP&C’s more recent projects. I may honestly just have to buy this one for my collection! Resonate is a book written for everyone. As a former teacher, I really loved learning some new things from this book! It was interesting, well laid out, informative, and had an incredible amount of relevant stories and examples to share. The data and timelines following historical speeches and why they were powerful were incredibly intriguing and thought provoking. The idea of presentations as a completely different media had me genuinely considering some of the many presentations I’ve given in my lifetime (mostly while teaching for obvious reasons with a much more demanding audience, some in the business arena) and how I could potentially reframe them to make even more of an impact. A large part of the book, which I will be utilizing next time I have a presentation to prepare, is how to lay out your presentation and get it organized. And not only how to do it, but why to do it that way. How to think about yourself and your audience. How to get them to really pay attention to your ideas and then get excited about them as well. How to use slideshows effectively, but not to rely on the slides too much. We’ve all been in boring meetings with boring presentations. But by reframing the purpose behind your presentation and not hiding behind the slides or the podium, it can become more of the powerful idea and less of the boring exercise we’re all familiar with. My favorite part of the book was towards the end, but it was more of a personal connection than a professional one. The book has ‘case studies’ throughout that really dive into a historical example. Seeing real world examples is helpful and I'm a history buff that enjoys that kind of context. One case study caught my former music teacher eye, though, and it was that of Leonard Bernstein. His Young People’s Concerts I’d actually used in my own classroom and to see her dissecting why they were so incredible AND learning new stuff about it was such a treat. We're grateful for those who keep their fingers on the pulse of news like this. An interesting and insightful take. A month or so ago, I posed a discussion question about opening up more potential socioeconomic categories or not. I think this speaks to not opening up more categories, but potentially expanding the ones we do have to include more opportunity for all. A short, worthwhile read.
