  • Great advice, Patrick. Matt Brown is also spot on, "watch what they do, not what they say". We'd suggest a slight modification to "measure" what they do. 🚀 UK & European startups could also consider hiring fractional sales & marketing to mitigate both fit and expense risks. Post a role for free on our platform and shop both talent profiles and service offerings tailored to startups.

Most European startups who want to go to the US fail. It is not easy over there, that is for sure. Here are some differences that make it even harder to sell in the US: 1️⃣ After a first sales meeting, Americans will make you feel as if you built the most amazing thing on the planet. (Besides "Amazing", the will also frequently use "awesome".) It will be even harder to keep that healthy sales pessimism you need at the beginning. 2️⃣ The American culture is much more individualistic than the European. That means, from early on, Americans learn how to assert themselves against others in a much more competitive environment. What are implications of that? If you want to hire someone in the US, you have to take that into consideration. People are good at selling themselves, much more so than Europeans. The first one you meet will sound like a compelling hire. But stop right there! Make sure it is not just because they are better talkers. 3️⃣ The above difference also has an effect when it comes to winning clients, investors, and partners. Think about it: All those others who sell to these are Americans who are better at selling. You have two options: Find really good American partners or sell as a founder again. Don't hire a "normal" American salesperson and think you can be successful. 4️⃣ Selling can go much faster in the US. How so? Decisions are more top-down than in Europe. They make the decision with fewer people in mind, if any at all. That changed slightly over the last years as more people are involved. 5️⃣ All outreach channels are more overused than in Europe. Contacts data are much easier available (especially mobile numbers) and many SDR teams do 100-200 activities a day in order to book meetings. That is what you will need to compete against. 6️⃣ American contracts are terrible - all said 😅 Anything else you encountered over the Atlantic?

Our latest blog post breaks down the win-win proposition for startups opting for fractional CROs over full-time hires. 💡 Why consider a fractional CRO? - Cost-effective: Get the expertise without the full-time salary. - Scalable: Flexibility to increase or decrease commitment based on your business needs. - Experience on-demand: Gain immediate access to top-tier talent who have scaled multiple startups. Is the so-called “traditional” retirement age a relic of workforces past? If a growing number of baby boomers and Gen Xers had it their way, it would be. And it’d be replaced with a more gradual exit from the workforce that gives employees more control over their departure. In fact, one in three workers in the U.S. over age 50 desires a phased approach to retirement, according to the 2024 Global Benefits Attitudes Survey of 10,000 workers performed by advisory and brokerage firm WTW (formerly Willis Towers Watson). The survey finds 15% of these workers have already started to phase out of work—by reducing hours or responsibilities, for example—and another 19% plan to in the future.
