As we wrap up 2024, we want to thank everyone who contributed to another great year. How can you address a problem that you don't know you have? This is a reality for health plans today. Many plans aren’t closely tracking two serious mental health conditions that dramatically impact member costs: PTSD and panic disorder. Rates of undiagnosed plan members with PTSD and panic disorder are about 3x that of the diagnosed population. That means 30% of plan members don’t even know they have these conditions – but they are still utilizing emergency rooms and other health care services to manage their debilitating symptoms. Anxiety and diabetes are more closely linked than you may realize. As Freespira CEO Joseph Perekupka writes in today's MedCity News: "Emerging evidence suggests that mental health issues, like anxiety, are intertwined with diabetes and can significantly influence both its onset and progression. Those with diabetes have a prevalence of anxiety that is three times higher than the general population. While stress and anxiety are normal parts of life, chronic stress alters hormonal pathways, induces systemic inflammation, and disrupts metabolic balance. Addressing mental health should be seen as not merely complementary but as a fundamental part of fully understanding and managing diabetes." The article explores how healthcare organizations can build trust to reach underserved communities. “How we’re building trust is we’re asking very specific questions,” Perekupka said. “Every patient that goes through our program is paired up with a care coach that guides them through 28 days. They’re not practicing medicine. They’re really their partner on this journey. But through that, there is trust that’s built because they feel like they have somebody that’s helping guide them."
