In 3 weeks, JustLead will be hosting the 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 session as part of our Equity Training Series! This session, in collaboration with Basilica Bio and Front and Centered, introduces the core concepts and importance of environmental justice within equity work. Participants will explore the movement's history, key principles, and its connection to social determinants of health. Through interactive discussions, attendees will reflect on current challenges and identify actionable steps to address environmental injustices in their communities. In October 2024, the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle convened 22 people from south Seattle for a Community Assembly focused on climate resilience. They shared their experiences and discussed climate justice issues; envisioned resilient futures for their homes, neighborhoods, and cities; and translated their visions into tangible policy recommendations. PLEASE SHARE: No Washingtonian should have to choose between energy and their other basic needs. While there are a variety of energy assistance programs out there, according to Washington State Department of Commerce only about one in five low-income households who qualify were being served by such programs as of 2023. Meanwhile, single statewide programs with similar eligibility criteria, such as SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), can boast an estimated 100% enrollment rate. At Front and Centered, we know through the experiences of our frontline coalition members that working families in Washington State really need a statewide energy assistance program. That's why we're excited to share that we've secured a hearing for House Bill 1903, happening tomorrow morning in the House Environment and Energy Committee! Young people have creative ideas and are leading climate action strategies around the world! As part of the Community Education in Action program, twelve selected youth groups interested in co-creating a learning resource that incorporates a Just Transition perspective will receive $800 and support from a mentor to complete their project and present it at our in-person workshops in March! These mini-grants are intended to amplify the voices and leadership of youth across Washington State and promote youth climate action. The application is very simple and can be submitted before February 7! Results will be announced on February 14.
