A massive congratulations to all involved with this massive accomplishment! Forward Global was proud to partner on this event in support of members Sylvie Trottier and Claire Trottier, and our own Lisa Wolverton who chaired this incredible panel of philanthropic institutions and experts sharing concrete examples of how they are funding in the climate space. Special thanks to the Clean Economy Fund for demonstrating how community can be a catalyst for increased and impactful giving, as well as panelists Jane Rabinowicz of McConnell Foundation, Eric St-Pierre of Trottier Family Foundation, Luke Gilgan of Peter Gilgan Foundation, and Joanna Klimczak of CREO.
An exciting advance in the right direction for Canada: another $405M in wealthy family philanthropic capital was publically committed yesterday towards accelerating Canada’s decarbonization transition, with a target for Canada to finally meet the global average of total annual proportion of philanthropic dollars deployed to climate. 90%+ of the decarbonization transition is going to be financed by investment markets from the private sector, which is where my team and I at CREO are focused. Alongside this, government dollars and philanthropic/catalytic capital play a crucial role. There are also several contexts where the answer is for all three capital types to strategically team up. The latter is why I was especially pleased to speak yesterday at the #ClimateChampionsAssembly alongside Eric St-Pierre, Executive Director of the Trottier Family Foundation, Jane Rabinowicz, CEO of The McConnell Foundation, Luke Gilgan, Board Member of the Peter Gilgan Foundation, and Lisa Wolverton, President of Forward Global Canada. We covered strategic approaches to using philanthropy for climate outcomes. They shared excellent examples, and my message focused on channeling philanthropy to de-risk investing. ➡️Philanthropy can have high value in two areas for climate: 1. To fill capital gaps behind necessary endeavours that are not designed for business capital nor getting government attention. 2. To de-risk & catalyze business investment that would otherwise not be possible. In so doing you’re morphing philanthropic dollars into catalytic dollars and unlocking the 90% mentioned above. ➡️For those willing to do #2, here are 5 areas to consider being a de-risker: 1. De-risk technology (e.g., back not yet fully proven tech that you believe has potential to be a climate solution). 2. De-risk transactions (e.g., act as first-loss tranche, credit enhancer, or forgive returns, to enable a market-rate investor to participate in the deal - first of a kind plants are seeking this). 3. De-risk policy (e.g., be the hedge for other investors on public policies that bode some uncertainty, like the carbon price in Canada). 4. De-risk a sub-market (e.g., act as assurance to capital flows into underserved communities). 5. De-risk a region (e.g. de-risk currency risk or other uncertainties seen in some emerging markets). ➡️Reach out if you’d like to learn more. Thank you to Eric Campbell & the Clean Economy Fund for hosting, and congratulations on your leadership behind yesterday’s announcement alongside 9 fantastic families. And to the other wealth owners doing brilliant capital deployment work towards the decarbonization transition (I know many!) - be it investing, catalyzing, building, advocating, influencing - if you aren’t already, share it widely to encourage others. ➡️See the announcement in the The Globe and Mail here: https://lnkd.in/gBiMYS2C #climate #catalyticcapital #risk #derisking #climateinvesting #climatephilanthropy

Today is the fourth annual #NationalTruthandReconciliationDay, a day when we commemorate the tragic history and ongoing impact of residential schools in #Canada. At the same time, we understand that amplifying Indigenous voices and supporting Indigenous-led charities is both critical to reconciliation—and also just a starting point on a longer, deeper journey. If you’re looking to educate yourself and take action, there are numerous organizations, individuals, and ways to support. Start here. 👇

Today I learned that only 3.3% of donations in Canada support Indigenous charities. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is an opportunity to reflect on the intergenerational impacts of nearly a century of systemic abuse inflicted on Indigenous Peoples, including through the Canadian residential school system. Systemic discrimination, harmful government policies, and racism have created historic and modern injustices and inequalities — including long-term drinking water advisories, unequal access to healthcare and education, mental health crises for young people, and economic inequality. If you're looking to take action to address this, there are many organizations to support: CanadaHelps has an Indigenous Peoples Solidarity Fund, which includes more than 50 Indigenous-led charities from across Canada whose focus ranges from social services to arts and culture. There's also a movement where you can donate One Day's Pay, which is guided by The Circle on Philanthropy, a national Indigenous-led organization that works to transform the philanthropic sector to redistribute wealth, activate wisdom and strengthen organizational infrastructure for the purpose of Indigenous peoples, organizations, communities and nations. You can also amplify Indigenous voices, educate yourself and others, and advocate for systemic change. One Day's Pay, CanadaHelps, Wanda Brascoupe, Orange Shirt Society, Official Orange Shirt Society

This year, Robb Report recognized Diana Blank and Dena Kimball as pioneers and leaders in trust-based philanthropy. Founded by Diana and most recently led by Forward Global member Dena, their Kendeda Fund sunset last year after spending down its assets through an approach that prioritized unrestricted giving, multiyear grants, trusting local leadership, and advancing equity. While closed, the Fund continues to serve as a bright example of the power and purpose of investing in impact, here and now.
