Once a month, Gallagher lawyers and staff and their families volunteer to serve dinner to the guests of The Franciscan Center of Baltimore. This month’s volunteers included one of Gallagher’s experienced commercial litigators, David Sommer, and two of his children, Greta and Tommy. David’s volunteerism extends beyond the Franciscan Center. This year, David serves as president of the boards of directors of Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service (MVLS) and the Bankruptcy Bar Association for the District of Maryland. We thank him and his family for their service to the community!

It was so great to see so many University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law alumni and friends here today for our Career Exploration Fair, including from Gallagher Evelius & Jones LLP, Venable LLP, Miles & Stockbridge P.C., and Richards, Layton & Finger. Special shout out to Alumni Board member Jade McDuffie McClary, Esq. '16 for coming out to talk to students about clerking. We love when our alums come back to see us --don't be strangers!

Gallagher attorneys and paralegals recently engaged in an eye-opening experience learning about the challenges confronting the asylum-seeking clients of the Tahirih Justice Center. Following an informative clinic and guidance on trauma-informed interviewing presented by wonderful representatives from Tahirih, the Gallagher team embarked on pro bono work helping clients to complete asylum applications. “It was jarring to see how complex it was to fill out the application,” remarked one attorney who communicated with her client through an interpreter. Gallagher worked to create a comfortable, safe, environment for the Tahirih clients, who have endured significant hardships to come to the US. Participating Gallagher attorneys found the experience to be a great way of engaging in impactful pro bono work and to helping clients take the first step on the road asylum. Thank you to Tahirih for presenting the clinic and sharing this opportunity.
Tahirih Justice Center's Maryland team was thrilled to work alongside volunteer attorneys and paralegals of Gallagher Evelius & Jones LLP for our asylum clinic today! Volunteers supported our clients with the preparation of their asylum applications after receiving Tahirih's robust training on asylum and trauma-informed interviewing. Our clients reported feeling warmly welcomed by the volunteers and supported by Tahirih legal and social services staff! The firm then hosted Tahirih for a pro bono luncheon to hear more about our work to end gender-based violence and how they can support our mission, particularly with the new administration's efforts starting next year. Thank you, Gallagher Evelius & Jones LLP, for your dedicated pursuit of justice for some of the most vulnerable amongst us!

Gallagher was delighted to serve as a presenting sponsor of the Loyola University Maryland Sellinger School of Business and Management Business Leader of the Year/2024 event honoring David N. Maine, MD, MBA, president and CEO of Mercy Health Services. In addition to expressing love and gratitude for his children and his wife of 21 years, Dr. Maine shared how in the early 1970s, his parents escaped persecution from Iraq and found refuge in Rochester, N.Y. Dr. Maine said he was shaped by his parents’ resilience, and they planted the seeds for his dedication to service. Gallagher’s health, employment, and litigation attorneys were honored to join our friends and colleagues at Mercy Medical Center, Baltimore, MD and Loyola in celebrating Dr. Maine's leadership.

Gallagher attorneys and staff enjoyed an enriching experience in a curator-led tour of the Baltimore Museum of Art’s “Preoccupied: Indigenizing the Museum” exhibition. Highlighting the indigenous experience as a result of colonization, the locally and nationally publicized multimedia exhibition features an array of captivating and educational installations. Thank you to Gallagher’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee and to attorney Mark Saudek, who is a BMA board member, for providing the opportunity, and to BMA curator Leila Grothe for a passionate and detailed narration of the exhibit. “Preoccupied,” which features the artwork, perspectives, and histories of Native artists, will be available through Feb. 16, 2025.
