Happy Tax Season to all who celebrate! Here are a few of our keys that will hopefully help other tax pros out there: 1. Do not work more than 65 hours in a week. You will burn yourself out and cause brain fog later in March and April. Studies have shown that your productivity taps out after 55 hours of work per week. 2. Do not work on Sundays until April. Unfortunately, you sometimes have to make exceptions to prepare your F clients' returns (Friends and Family). 3. Extensions are your friend. As long as you give clients an estimate on what to pay with their extensions, most don't have any problem extending. 4. Do not finish any returns after April 1st. These will have mistakes because you will rush them, and your brain will be mushy after pushing yourself for three months. You and your clients are better off extending these returns and finishing them in May or June. 5. Extend all new clients that reach out to you after January 1st. These returns will take more time than you expect and should be extended. Also, limit new client calls and have a strict cutoff of when you will not take additional clients. New clients that reach out in March or April will likely not be good clients. 6. Do not eat at your desk. You need a break during the day. Also, limit the amount of fast food you eat. 7. Keep exercising. Even a short walk at night, 30 minutes daily, will do the trick. 8. Don't skip family events or stop seeing friends. You need to see people who are outside the tax bubble.
