On October 24, Global Beverage Team and the Chicago Board of Trade celebrated National Mezcal Day (Oct. 21) and Dia de los Muertos (Nov. 1-2). The event, held in the buildings historic vault and open to all tenants, showcased a taste of tradition with an ofrenda, a variety of Mexican candies, pan de muerto, and samples of Xicala Mezcal. What is day of the dead? A traditional Mexican holiday, dia de los muertos is about remembering and celebrating the lives of those no longer with us on the Earthly plane. "Ofrendas," altars, are set up at loved ones graves and home, decorated with marigolds, incense, candles, and their favorite foods/drink to welcome back their souls, with the guidance of their alebrije. What are alebrijes? These unique creatures celebrate and honor the beauty of a more ethereal and spiritual world. Seen as Mexican spirit animals, it is believed that each person has an alebrije to guide them not only in life, but throughout the afterlife as well.

Elevate your cooking game with Maracame Reposado Tequila! Try making traditional “Mexican Chicken Mole” and add a splash of Maracame Tequila for an added explosion of flavor. What is Mole? The Mexican states of Puebla and Oaxaca are widely recognized as the birthplace of mole. Although now a national dish, Mole often times looks and tastes very different across each Mexican state. Even though it contains the same ingredients for the base – dried chilis, nuts, seeds, and chocolate – traditional mole requires 30 ingredients, but can include up to almost 100 ingredients!

Discover the significance of the ofrenda for Día de Muertos, or day of the dead. An ofrenda is an alter that honors those that have passed away, with photos, candles, flowers, food, and other symbolic items to remember and celebrate their lives. The flowers, most commonly marigolds, are a symbol of the festivities, adorning the ofrenda with a bright golden color and a sweet smell in order to welcome the souls of those the ofrenda is dedicated to. The light of the candles symbolizes faith, the flickering flame guiding the deceased soul to their ofrenda to visit their loved ones and their home. Finally, a touch of Xicala to remember the important and happy events in their lives upon their visit on the day of the dead. #DiadelosMuertos #DayoftheDead #Ofrenda #Tradition #Rememberance #XicalaMezcal
