Last year was huge for AI developments at Google, with major launches and updates that could have promising applications for coastal communities and sustainability efforts. A few highlights from Google's 2024 AI news that our chapter is particularly excited about: 🌊 Google unveiled new satellite technology that uses AI to detect wildfires earlier, including smaller fires. With coastal Georgia's risk of wildfires, this could be game-changing for rapid response. 🐋 There were major updates to Google's AI mapping of ocean infrastructure and human activity at sea. Better understanding things like shipping routes and biodiversity is key for coastal preservation. 🌳 Google shared how its flood forecasting models now provide hyper-local predictions globally. Preparing for sea level rise and flood risks is crucial for our coastal communities. 🐟 AlphaFold 3 can now predict the structure and interactions of all of life's molecules. This could unlock sustainability breakthroughs like developing plant-based plastics that don't pollute our beaches and marshes. And that's just scratching the surface! With Google's AI tools becoming more capable and integrated across products, the opportunities to tackle coastal challenges are expanding rapidly. By simply uploading repeat photos of the exact location using the #CoastSnap app, you can contribute valuable data to help researchers understand and predict coastal changes. 📷🔍 Photogrammetry turns your photos into data as accurate as professional surveys, allowing scientists to track changes due to storms, sea-level rise, and other factors.
