STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH ON PRESIDENT JAMES EARL CARTER, JR. "Laura and I send our heartfelt condolences to Jack, Chip, Jeff, Amy, and the entire Carter family. “James Earl Carter, Jr., was a man of deeply held convictions. He was loyal to his family, his community, and his country. President Carter dignified the office. And his efforts to leave behind a better world didn’t end with the presidency. His work with Habitat for Humanity and the Carter Center set an example of service that will inspire Americans for generations. "We join our fellow citizens in giving thanks for Jimmy Carter and in prayer for his family.”

"The forced disappearance and pretrial detention Arafa has experienced are just two hallmarks of Egypt’s harsh and arbitrary judicial system," shares Bush Institute Fellow Ellen Bork in a recent article on Marwa Arafa, an Egyptian jailed for helping political prisoners and their families survive. "While Mohammadi’s temporary release is welcome, it is also far too short at 21 days and was granted far too late. Doctors recommended a three-month recovery period following surgery related to suspected cancer on Mohammadi’s leg Nov. 14, yet she was at first transferred back to Evin Prison only two days later. Unsanitary conditions in her overcrowded cell complicatedher recovery and intensified pain she was already experiencing." — Bush Institute Director of Global Policy Jessica Ludwig Read the full story in this #StruggleForFreedom update: https://lnkd.in/gvRMsPPP

"A key but sometimes overlooked way for governments to ensure a reliable flow of information across their nations is to provide citizens, including journalists, access to official documents such as public contracts and budgets. [...] Unfortunately, Mexico’s new president, Claudia Sheinbaum, is failing the access test only weeks into her administration,” says Bush Institute's Bill McKenzie on the roadblocks that citizens of Mexico face when seeking out information about their government. Four tenets have been key to PEPFAR’s success in the countries that have made the most progress and can be translated to countries still facing challenges: 1. Clear, quantifiable goals that dictate strategy, both overall and at the individual country level. 2. Proactive, rigorous management which ensures both quantitative and qualitative data continuously inform decision-making and the allocation of resources. 3. Close collaboration with communities most affected by the pandemic, including host governments and their partners shaping programmatic implementation at the country level. 4. Cooperation among global institutions (such as UNAIDS, the World Health Organization, and the Global Fund), bilateral programs (like PEPFAR), and country governments to ensure policy and funding align to maximize effectiveness. "If Congress decides to pursue deficit reduction, additional revenues should come primarily from reducing deductions to avoid disincentivizing work, savings, and investment rather than form large increases in tax rates," says Bush Institute's Cullum Clark in discussing potential tax increases, that is if the incoming administration and Congress doesn't act fast. "Most Americans will experience large tax increases if Congress doesn’t act in 2025 to avoid tax policy changes neither party wants," says Bush Institute's Director of Bush Institute-SMU Economic Growth Initiative Cullum Clark. Here's why: https://lnkd.in/gXf5dFqk

"What happened next couldn’t have been more apt, particularly in the City of Brotherly Love. During a reflective session of the Presidential Leadership Scholars program, Peña uncharacteristically teared up when asked to consider 'what or who do you wish you could prioritize?' Dr. Anahita Dua began to press her to find out what was wrong [...]" Keep reading this moving story about Presidential Leadership Scholars Nubia Peña, written by Bush Institute's Margot Habiby: https://lnkd.in/g6dyciY8
