I'm ecstatic to announce my new report, The State of AI-Related Apprenticeships, with co-author Jacob Feldgoise!
As demand for AI talent skyrockets, traditional education pathways alone can’t keep up. Apprenticeships may offer a powerful alternative—offering hands-on, paid training for middle-skill workers to break into AI-related roles.
In our latest report from the Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET), we analyze a decade of Department of Labor RAPIDS data (2013–2023) to uncover trends in AI apprenticeships:
- 191% growth in AI apprenticeships from 2020 to 2022—nearly 19,000 new apprentices registered since 2013.
- 68% completion rate—25% higher than the national average, proving these programs are an effective talent pipeline.
- AI apprenticeships aren’t just in tech hubs—Missouri, Texas, and California lead the way, but five of the top 10 states are not among the most populous.
- Diversity matters: AI apprenticeships are outperforming other tech fields in recruiting Black apprentices, but gaps persist for women and Hispanic workers.
- Small- and medium-sized firms are increasingly using apprenticeships, but large sponsors still dominate. Expanding access will require more support for smaller organizations.
- Upskilling and reskilling through apprenticeships is key to ensuring equitable access to AI-related jobs. Policymakers and industry leaders must continue investing in these pathways to diversify and strengthen the AI workforce.
