  • Today, Nov. 30, is Small Business Saturday. GTRI and Georgia Tech have helped and helped create small businesses for decades. Many companies have spun-off from the Institute. One of the key ways we support business is through the Enterprise Innovation Institute. (https://lnkd.in/gNZF9HGx) The Enterprise Innovation Institute is Georgia Tech’s economic development arm. It serves as one of the primary vehicles to achieve Georgia Tech’s goal of expanded local, regional, and global outreach. The Enterprise Innovation Institute is the nation’s largest, most comprehensive university-based program of * entrepreneurship and startup company development * business and industry growth * ecosystem development * international outreach Part of GTRI's mission is to "enhance State of Georgia economic development."

  • Jud Ready always wanted to be an astronaut. “From first grade forward, that’s what I planned to do,” said Ready, principal research engineer at the Georgia Tech Research Institute and adjunct professor in the Georgia Tech School of Materials Science and Engineering. “While I was studying engineering in college, I realized that I didn’t want to build the spaceship. I wanted to work inside the spaceship.” Ready, along with other members of the Georgia Tech community, is highlighted in a Georgia Tech Research feature story titled "Space Race: Georgia Tech’s Aspiring Astronauts." The article tells the stories of persons with ties to Georgia Tech who have aspired to become NASA astronauts or are currently actively trying to do so. Georgia Tech has produced 14 astronauts in its history. Read more (https://lnkd.in/e6hWQj7M)

  • The latest episode of the Georgia Tech Research podcast delves into the remarkable journeys of two Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) researchers. Megan Birch, a Research Scientist in GTRI's Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory (EOSL), recently became the inaugural winner of the @witatl "Young Professional" Woman of the Year Award. Information and Communications Laboratory (ICL) Principal Research Scientist Sheila Isbell, was a finalist for the Women In Technology (WIT) Woman of the Year award in the "Medium/Mid-Sized" category. Hosted by GTRI Senior Researcher Eric Klein, the episode explores Megan and Sheila’s stories, insights, and the impact they have made at GTRI and as women in STEM professions. https://lnkd.in/e6ZyWVxK

  • A technology co-developed by a GTRI team recently earned a top industry award! The Heat Injury Prevention System (HIPS), a technology that was co-developed by GTRI, is a wearable sensor system that can monitor a person's heat injury risk. HIPS provides accurate, early warning of heat stroke several minutes in advance of visible symptoms. HIPS recently received an "R&D 100" Award (https://lnkd.in/emAB5wGH). Dubbed the "Oscars of Innovation," the awards recognize the 100 most significant technologies transitioned to use or introduced into the marketplace in the past year. The system collects data from a sensor worn on a chest strap and employs algorithms for estimating body temperature, gait instability, and adaptive physiological strain index. The system then provides an individual's heat-injury prediction on a mobile app. The affordability, accuracy, and user-acceptability of HIPS have led to its integration into operational environments for the military. GTRI worked with U.S. Army Medical Materiel Development Activity, U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine, and engineering research and development company Odic Inc. to develop the wearable. Alessio Medda, a GTRI principal research engineer is co-lead of the project (pictured at the right of the second photo, along with fellow researcher Brian King). Read more about the development of HIPS here (https://lnkd.in/g35-MHPf).
