With the passing of President Jimmy Carter, the world has lost an incredible leader and philanthropist, and the state of Georgia has lost a truly irreplaceable person who is a part of our shared heritage and helped build the Georgia we know today. While we mourn the loss of President Carter, we also celebrate his long life of faith, his steadfast example of service and his tireless commitment to spreading peace and improving and uplifting the lives of people across the globe. Born in Plains, Georgia, 100 years ago, he served his state and nation at all levels - in the U.S. Navy, as a farmer and businessman, as a state legislator and governor, and as president of the United States. In each role, he brought a dedication to leading with kindness and thoughtfulness, and a unique ability to work through challenges and bring people together for the good of others.
There are few more inspiring examples of devotion and true partnership than that between President Carter and his wife Rosalynn, with whom he founded the Carter Center, focusing on resolving conflict, promoting democracy, protecting human rights, and preventing disease at home and abroad. The Carters were also well known for their work with Habitat for Humanity in advancing the mission of that organization and building of thousands of homes for families over decades – including working alongside many Georgia Power volunteers in communities across our state. Whether on the world stage or quietly teaching Sunday School in his local church well into his 90s, President Carter displayed and lived out his strong sense of purpose and citizenship every single day and, while he will be sorely missed, his legacy of service will continue to inspire us and many others for generations.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Carter family during this time.
