It was our privilege to spend time at the Weisman Art Museum with Josh and the Juno UX cohort from Prime Digital Academy, sharing the work we did to create Capption. It's one thing to talk about accessibility and inclusion as designers-that's easy and quite common. It's rare to dive in, ask questions, come to understand, and hopefully empathize with what it means to live with barriers. If your design worldview grew, this was time well spent!
About eight months ago, I had lunch with my friend and former colleague Daniel Barthel. There was no agenda, no networking—just catching up. After the main course was cleared, our conversation turned to using our time, energy, and experience to create things that make a difference. That’s when Dan took out his wallet, pulled out a plastic card, and set it on the table. “This is what Sherman Bausch and I have been working on lately,” he said. He went on to tell me about Capption, the product they were in the process of launching. Right there on the restaurant table, he demoed for me how it worked, showing how they were tackling the very real problem of information accessibility in museum exhibits. The designer in me was amazed by the simplicity and elegance of the solution—but what truly blew me away was the research and testing process Dan described. At the time, I thought to myself, “This is one of the best UX research case studies I’ve ever heard.” Fast forward six months, and I’d started teaching in the Prime Digital Academy UX program. I knew I had to figure out a way to get Dan to share his story with my students. Turns out, all I had to do was text him and ask. He immediately said yes—and then went one step further. “We just implemented it at the Weisman,” he said. “Do you want me to reach out to them and see if we could meet there and see it in action, in context?” So, on November 13th, I, along with fourteen students from Prime’s Juno UX cohort, visited the Weisman Art Museum. We got to hear from Dan about how Capption was born, the user research and testing that went into it, and the technical architecture and business operations behind it. It was an incredibly rich and educational experience—a fantastic real-world example of how user-centered design can create meaningful impact. A huge thanks to Dan and the entire Capption team for dedicating their time, energy, and expertise to creating a product that truly makes a difference. Accessible design is good design, and it consistently pushes the boundaries of what we expect from the products, services, and spaces we use. Another big thank you to the Weisman Art Museum’s Katie Covey Spanier and Ricki Williams for welcoming us so warmly, letting us take over a studio for the afternoon, and allowing us to explore the Weisman's beautiful space and exhibits. Your commitment to art, accessibility, inclusion, and the intersection of all three is truly inspiring. And thanks to the wonderful Juno cohort UX Design students—Allie K., Ayantu Gamtessa, Chad David, Chloe Dalbard, Damian Wojtowicz, EJ Makela, Fathumo Mohamed, Lauren Hoerr, Liz C., Mamoun Alassouli, Matthew Collins, Megan Westlund, Omar Ahmed, Trevor Charon, and Tyree Barnes. I cannot wait to see what y'all make and do!

If you're near to the History Center Lake Forest Lake Bluff, or plan on passing by this winter, make a point to stop and see their latest exhibit, "Returning Home from War", available through March 15, 2015. In just a few hours, we heard amazing stories from veterans and families about the trials and rewards of service, and what it was like to come home. If this is a topic that is close to your heart, the exhibit is worth the trip. Learn more in the link below.

Check out Capption's print debut in the August/September edition of Twin Cities Business magazine! It was a pleasure to spend time with Allison Kaplan to talk about vision loss, assistive technology, and radical inclusion for exhibits. Like most conversations about Capption, we quickly find that everyone knows someone who would benefit. Thank you to the American Swedish Institute for hosting this conversation. #lowvision #assistivetechnology #inclusion #exhibits https://lnkd.in/gsYDz4Yu
