If you had told me in college that I’d become a compensation leader, my first question would have been: “What is a compensation leader?” Even today, when I tell people what I do, many assume it’s printing paychecks. But in reality, compensation professionals develop skills that often lead to roles in Finance, Data Science, or even becoming a Head of HR. So, for anyone curious, here’s how I’d describe my role: ✨ Understand how our company’s talent drives the business -- do we need engineers to build products, or pilots to fly planes?  ✨ Understand top leaders' talent goals--are we hiring a new office in Dubai? Are we doubling in size and need more middle managers? ✨ Understand how various roles and teams measure goals ✨ Partner with finance to understand our budget for headcount ✨ Find data on what competitors are paying without violating antitrust laws ✨ Partner with recruiting to understand their data and process ✨ Create architecture systems (levels, titles) to match pay to skill and scope ✨ Use the data, budget and goals to create pay guidelines that are competitive for that specific type of work, in that specific industry, for those specific goals ✨ Craft cash and equity plans to benefit employees when goals are met or exceeded ✨ Generate guidelines for pay increases as an employee’s skill set expands ✨ Document how pay works and why for employees ✨ Implement systems to prevent inaccuracies or inequities in pay ✨ Monitor pay program effectiveness to ensure we are hiring the right people, and meeting the right goals, without compensation as an obstacle ✨ Rinse and repeat annually These tasks often require the following skills (and more): 🛠️ Excel and/or data querying skills for data gathering 🛠️ Baseline statistics or analytical skills for modeling 🛠️ Financial literacy to understand business goals and equity plans 🛠️ Baseline legal literacy to understand contracts for pay and bonuses 🛠️ Communication skills both written and verbal 🛠️ Negotiation skills There’s so much more that compensation professionals do, especially when we include total rewards, but for anyone who feels it’s a black box – this is a summary of what I’ve seen! How do you see your work as a compensation professional? Any skills or tasks to add? #Compensation #Comp #HR #Pequity

How long does it take your company to approve a pay adjustment? If your answer involves days of chasing managers and manually tracking changes, you’re not alone – but it doesn’t have to be this way. Streamlined approval workflows save time and reduce errors, but they also boost employee trust. When pay decisions are timely, employees feel valued. 💡 Tip: Evaluate your current approval process. Is there a single point of failure? Address that bottleneck first. What’s your biggest challenge in approvals? Let’s discuss! #CompensationApprovals #HRLeadership #PayStrategy #Pequity
