Our three top market developments of the month are as follows: 1) Vol awakens – the early-August selloff ended a period of relative market tranquility and proved to be the most significant market decline since a selloff began roughly a year ago. The Japanese Yen was particularly volatile, and the unwinding of “Yen-carry” trades likely spilled over into other markets. 2) Market structure matters – Several investing strategies (such as momentum, “multi-strat” / market neutral, and volatility control) typically unwind positions when risk spikes. The growth of these approaches can predispose market volatility to occur in short, sharp bursts, as witnessed recently. 3) Fundamentals assist – benign inflation readings and recently improved economic data helped support risk assets, triggering an almost equally sharp recovery in equity prices, but volatility lingers.
