** NEW RESOURCE: UNIFORM CHANGE HANDBOOK ** For almost two and a half years GUA has been helping girls and their families seek (and usually successfully achieve) uniform changes that include pants and shorts at their schools. The request from families started with a few enquiries here and there but as the awareness of this issue has grown and we’ve seen girls and their families feeling empowered to do something about uniform inequality we saw a clear need. A need to package up our info into something readily shared, as evergreen in content as we could plan for and a one stop resource for you. So here it is and we hope you find it really useful. Let us know if there’s anything that would make it better. Use this resource to take action! Imagine telling a woman in the workplace that she must wear a skirt/dress & had to ask for special permission to wear shorts or trousers. What the actual eff?! Jason Clare MP can you please explain to me why in 2024 we are allowing these sexist practices to continue in schools, forcing girls to wear dresses & skirts, & in this instance, Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal actually defending them??? Link to Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) article: https://lnkd.in/gCtPaTwq The school argued that forcing a girl to wear a skirt for formal occasions was “consistent with community standards.” What bullsh*t. What community? Since when do we as a society in 2024 expect girls & women MUST wear a dress or skirt to formal events? I know enough about media stories that they are the tip of the iceberg; they present a small part of an issue as if looking at it through a keyhole. But what is clear here is yet another example of entrenched sexism, discrimination, & patriarchy that forces our young people in schools to conform to rigid gender stereotypes, which have been shown to be harmful, & contribute to societal gender inequality, which is a contributing factor to gender-based violence. Does anyone know the school in this article? I am so angry that schools hide behind anonymity. These sexist practices need to be named & shamed. I’d also love to connect with the family if anyone knows them personally. You might recall I had my own experience of sex discrimination in schools with my son whereby the school tried to force him to have a ‘short back & sides’ haircut because he’s a boy.
