About GISMO GISMO is a forum for sharing data and data processing techniques, software training, news from GIS publications, meetings, vendors, etc. Founded in May 1990, GISMO is user-oriented and run on a completely volunteer basis by our members who come from many NYC agencies, universities, and public and private organizations. In addition, GISMO provides significant networking and professional development opportunities to its members. History GISMO was founded in 1990 and was, in its’ heyday, the New York Metropolitan Area’s largest geographic information systems (GIS) users’ group, with over 700 members from city, state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations and the private sector. GISMO continues to be a valued forum for sharing information on well-established and emerging geospatial technologies along with news from GIS publications, meetings, vendors as well as business, internship and software training opportunities. GISMO members range from students to savvy practitioners in & out of government: all cite significant benefits over the years from the networking promoted both virtually and in-person. GISMO programs typically run two-hours. Future schedules may vary between late afternoon or early evening to accommodate various sectors of the local geospatial community. GISMO Welcomes New Interim President to Board of Directors Happy GIS Day! GISMO announces a leadership transition with the resignation of President Jiin Wen and the appointment of a new Interim President Dara N. Mendeloff, GISP, effective November 1, 2024. Dara is moving on from her role as Board Member and is stepping into the role of Interim GISMO President to complete the 2023-2025 term in office. Jiin has been on the board since 2019, and served as President from 2021-2024. As part of the transition, Jiin will return to her position as an At-Large Board Member. The Board extends their gratitude to Jiin for her years of dedicated service to the organization as GISMO President. Her leadership and contributions have been instrumental in the growth and success of GISMO over the past years. GISMO also announces the appointment of Board Member Danielle Hartman, GISP as Secretary, and Board Member Alan Leidner as Treasurer, effective November 13th, 2024. On December 16, join us as GISMO hosts a webinar with Josh Delmonico, Director of the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC). Josh will talk about the newly published ten-year strategic plan for the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). Among the key elements of the Strategic Plan is the inclusion of local, state, tribal nations, NGO, and private organizations as partners in the building of the NSDI. We expect this will significantly expand opportunities to access and use spatial data from many sources to address problems and develop innovative solutions. Josh’s presentation will include an overview of FGDC, the National Geospatial Advisory Committee (NGAC), and current national geospatial initiatives.
