Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, Inc., serves 21 central and southeastern Indiana counties by distributing food to pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and other agencies that directly serve the hungry in Indiana. For every $1 donated, Gleaners can provide the equivalent of 8 meals to those in need. Gleaners also has a variety of direct service programs that directly target our most vulnerable populations, such as children and the elderly. All of Gleaners' programs and services share the common goal of getting food directly into the hands of those who need it most. This year, we were extremely honored to highlight the life and legacy of hunger champion Gunner Burnam. At just 13 years old, he came up with an innovative idea to feed his community by rescuing food cans from the Paynetown Campground and redistributing them to people facing hunger. Although Gunner died from a rare brain cancer before seeing that idea through, his vision still lives on at the WellSpring Food Pantry in Martinsville which serves hundreds of neighbors every month. We were fortunate enough to receive 13,800 pounds of chicken drumsticks and sausage courtesy of Miller Amish Country Poultry last week! High quality protein like this is absolutely essential in improving the lives and wellness of our neighbors. Unfortunately, it can be very hard to come by. “Meat is both an expensive and highly needed food item for our neighbors facing hunger,” said Fred Glass, president and CEO of Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana. “With need at high levels, this donation will help us stretch our already-tight food purchase budget and provide a highly desired source of protein for our neighbors.” We’re grateful for the kindness and generosity of this family-owned, Indiana business!
