🌟 Emerging Ismaili Innovator Spotlight: Firoza Mamdani, PhD, CCRP 🌟 We are excited to feature Dr. Firoza Mamdani as an Emerging Ismaili Innovator, whose groundbreaking work in genetics and neuropsychiatric research is driving new insights into mental health. With a Ph.D. in Human Genetics from McGill University, Firoza’s expertise spans a decade of innovative research in psychiatric genetics, biomarkers, and molecular biology. Currently serving as an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Human Behavior at UC Irvine, Firoza leads cutting-edge studies focused on stress, cellular aging, and suicide in major depressive disorders. Her work bridges basic science and clinical applications, including a translational study aimed at identifying predictive biomarkers for suicide in clinically depressed populations. Her previous research at McGill University explored the pharmacogenomics of mood disorders, including the identification of genetic markers for treatment response. Her contributions to the understanding of mitochondrial DNA variants in neuropsychiatric conditions have furthered our understanding of how genetic factors influence brain health. Firoza is also collaborating on projects investigating the role of genomics and sensory gating in bipolar disorder, expanding the field of precision medicine in psychiatry. 🌟 Ismaili Innovator Spotlight: Dr. Mansoor Saleh 🌟 Meet Dr. Mansoor Saleh, a distinguished hematologist-oncologist and clinical researcher whose contributions have significantly advanced cancer treatment and research. As the Professor and Chair of the Department of Haematology-Oncology at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa, Dr. Saleh leads efforts to enhance cancer care and research in the region. Dr. Saleh's medical journey began with an M.D. from the University of Heidelberg, followed by doctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Germany. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). At UAB, Dr. Saleh served as a tenured Professor of Medicine and Pathology and directed the First-in-Human Early Drug Development Program, focusing on targeted cancer therapies. His research has been widely recognized, with a Google Scholar h-index of 73 and over 35,000 citations, reflecting his influence in the field. In January 2020, Dr. Saleh joined Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi as the founding chair of the Department of Haematology-Oncology and director of the Cancer Centre. With over eight years of experience in nanophotonics, opto-mechanical engineering, and computational analysis, Kiumars is making significant strides in the world of optical systems and material sciences. Currently a Research Associate at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Kiumars is working at the cutting edge of light-matter interactions and micro-electronics, helping to shape the future of technology. Prior to his role at NIST, Kiumars was a NASA Postdoctoral Fellow at NASA Langley Research Center, where he focused on advancing high-precision optical systems and contributed to critical research on thermal properties and phase-change memory devices. His deep expertise in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and heat transfer has already led to multiple significant publications, including work on phononic metamaterials and ultralow thermal conductivity of advanced materials. Kiumars holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the University of Virginia and a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering from Miami University. His work has far-reaching implications in the fields of nanotechnology, micro-electronics, and computational physics, and his contributions are already being recognized by the scientific community.
