Empowering communities to tackle maternal and infant mortality

About us

Since 2010, the Global Midwife Education Foundation (GMEF) has worked in partnership with isolated, indigenous communities in rural Bolivia to reduce suffering & transform women and children's access to essential resources & healthcare. Initiatives focus on five critical areas: 1. FAMILY PLANNING: Empowering women with options to protect their health, plan their families, and shape their futures. 2. MATERNITY CARE: Reducing preventable deaths during pregnancy and childbirth through improved access to high-quality services. 3. HEALTH LITERACY: Equipping women with the knowledge they need for lifelong health and empowerment. 4. INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENT: Supporting clean water and sanitation access to prevent chronic illness and malnutrition. 5. CERVICAL CANCER PREVENTION: Combating one of the highest rates of preventable cervical cancer deaths in the world. GMEF collaborates with community members, local healthcare providers, and Bolivia’s Ministries of Health and Environment to expand and enhance healthcare programs. This work involves assessing community needs, strengthening existing resources, and implementing sustainable solutions that save lives and improve health. GMEF envisions a future where women have the knowledge, resources, and access to the healthcare they need to thrive. To achieve sustainable, long-term improvement in women’s health and quality of life, initiatives include expanding access to long-acting reversible contraceptives, training local providers in reproductive healthcare and obstetric emergency management, supporting facility-based quality improvement programs based on the International Childbirth Initiative’s standards of safe and respectful care, and extending the community health worker program to three new regions annually. Empowering women to lead healthier lives creates ripple effects that strengthen families and communities across Bolivia and across generations.

  • Empowerment starts with understanding—and there’s no better way to teach than through the heart of a community’s culture. Recently, one of our incredible facilitators led a group of promotoras (community health workers) in a lesson about clean water and sanitation. But this wasn’t just any lesson—it was taught through a song, beautifully crafted in their indigenous language. 🎶💧 This approach not only made the information memorable but also honored the community’s rich cultural heritage, building trust and engagement. These promotoras are now equipped with vital knowledge to teach their communities about preventing waterborne illnesses and the importance of clean water for health and dignity. When education is rooted in respect for local traditions, it empowers women to lead with confidence and connect deeply with their communities. Together, we’re building sustainable change, one song and one village at a time. 💙 #GlobalHealth #CommunityEmpowerment #CulturalRespect #CleanWater #WomenInLeadership #GMEFImpact White Ribbon Alliance

  • "I was pregnant, I was afraid to go to the health post for checkups. I told the Promotora, and she explained to me the importance of prenatal check-ups and even went with me to my visits!" Communities that participated in our Community Health Worker (Promotora) program have seen incredible transformations, including a doubling in the number of women receiving prenatal care. Promotoras are trusted local women trained to provide essential health education and support. They bridge the gap between healthcare providers and their communities, ensuring women feel safe, informed, and empowered to access care. #MaternalHealth #CommunityHealth #Empowerment #GMEFImpact #HealthEquity

  • 🌍 Clean Water: Empowering Women and Girls Worldwide 💧 Access to clean water is not just a basic human right; it’s a powerful enabler of equality and opportunity. For women and girls, clean water means more than just health—it means time, education, and empowerment. 🚶♀️ Reduced Burden: Many women and girls spend hours every day collecting water, often from unsafe sources. Clean, accessible water frees them to focus on education, work, and personal growth. 🎓 Education: Girls are more likely to stay in school when clean water and sanitation facilities are available. Education opens doors to brighter futures for them and their communities. 🏥 Health: Clean water prevents waterborne diseases that disproportionately impact women and children, improving overall well-being. 💡 Clean water is the cornerstone of sustainable development, and its impact on gender equality cannot be overstated. Together, we can support initiatives that ensure access to safe water for everyone, everywhere. Let’s act now to create a future where no woman or girl is held back by the lack of clean water. 💙 #SustainableDevelopment #GenderEquality #CleanWaterForAll #Empowerment

  • Why Community Health Workers Are Transformative for Their Communities Community health workers (CHWs) are more than healthcare providers—they are trusted neighbors, cultural bridges, and advocates for change. Coming from the same communities they serve, CHWs have a deep understanding of local languages, traditions, and challenges. Their unique position allows them to: ✅ Build trust and overcome cultural barriers. ✅ Deliver care tailored to their community's specific needs. ✅ Act as vital links between underserved populations and formal healthcare systems. When equipped with the right training and resources, CHWs empower their communities, improve health outcomes, and create sustainable solutions that last for generations. 💪💙 Let’s continue to support and celebrate the incredible impact CHWs have around the world. 🌟 #CommunityHealthWorkers #GlobalHealth #EquityInHealthcare #SustainableDevelopment
