  • We are thrilled to present our March Scientist of the Month, Olav Schewe, a PhD Candidate in the Department of Education at the University of Oxford and author of two international best-selling books on effective learning. As a leading voice in the science of learning, he bridges cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and educational technology to empower learners worldwide. Rooted in his personal journey to optimize study habits, his research focuses on applying cognitive psychology and neuroscience to improve teaching practices and EdTech, while helping learners adopt evidence-based strategies. Using randomized controlled trials and interviews, he studies digital study skills interventions in higher education, revealing that effective study habits—cultivable through training—strongly predict academic success. Committed to practical application, Schewe co-authored Learn Like a Pro (with Dr. Barbara Oakley) and Super Student, synthesizing neuroscientific strategies for learners of all ages. His TEDx talk, “The Power of Asking How,” further amplifies his mission to democratize access to effective learning techniques. Currently advising on EdTech initiatives and pursuing doctoral research, Schewe continues to advance our understanding of how learners can adopt more strategic approaches. His work not only enriches academic discourse but also equips educators and students with tools to overcome challenges, turning them into stepping stones for growth. We are honored to recognize Olav Schewe as a transformative figure in education research and eagerly anticipate his future contributions to the science of learning. • We are committed to continuously sharing valuable resources to implement the Science of Learning. Today, we highlight the book "Learning How To Learn," coauthored by Dr. Barbara Oakley and Dr. Terry Sejnowski, and with the essential contribution of Alistair McConville to make it easier to understand. This book was written for teenagers, but we assure you that everyone will benefit from it! It provides vital neuroscience notions to improve our learning process and understand how we learn. The authors use metaphors, illustrations, and quotidian examples to help readers better grasp complex topics. Each chapter builds on the last, combining scientific evidence and practical exercises to reinforce skills like focused vs. diffused thinking, memory consolidation through sleep, and overcoming procrastination. For example, the Pomodoro Technique and self-testing strategies are presented as tools to combat distractions and solidify knowledge. This book will help readers develop the essential skill of learning!

THE COLLECTIVE GROWTH SYSTEM Transforming Teacher Evaluation through Culture Building The Collective Growth System (CGS) offers a complete, coherent alternative to observation/supervision/evaluation based approaches to professional growth. Here's the WHY: Most current systems, including 'well-known' models are known to have little impact where it matters...on student learning These models focus on 'inputs' i.e. Teaching Standards', not IMPACTS: Student Learning Experiences They rely mainly on observation for evidence gathering even though we know that (a) the act of observing changes what we observe (b) we can't observe enough to make a sustained difference. They often have little buy-in or credibility among teachers...and sometimes not even among leaders...because they have not been built within the actual school culture. If there's genuine buy-in, great teaching should be what we do when NOBODY'S watching When every teacher comes up with a set of personal goals each year, it's nigh-on impossible to keep track of them and ensure they have real impact. There's a lot more but here's a summary: According to substantive research by Hattie and others, the biggest learning impact is achieved through Collective Teacher Efficacy. IF we know that THEN surely it makes sense to build teacher efficacy COLLECTIVELY. In brief, that's what the CGS does. We are sharing the system via 5 interactive webinars, so that we build our own collective efficacy. Naturally, the complete system is provided to all participants. We have already run one successful Cohort, timed to be convenient for the Americas, and are now responding to requests by running Cohort 2, at times we hope work well for Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The details are in the attached flier. We are also delighted to announce that this Cohort is being supported by our website partners, Finalist, and the details are being shared with their network. If you are interested in a genuine, constructive alternative to broken teacher evaluation systems, please think about joining us for this transformative journey. #CGCKevin #TheCGCProject #CarolinaUlloa #RebeccaUme #LeoThompson # GeraldinedeFazio #ParulMinhas #MichaelPeabody #LoriBoll #JayMcTighe #RaymondSchmidt #DeniseCerrato #MildredObuya #AngelaStockman #EthanvanDrunen #MeredithKaplan #PrakashNair #BenMarsh #BrandieSmith #BenCalsbeek #JeremyMoore #RachelMcKinnon #TomMaclean
