COP29 has marked an important milestone for solidarity levies. More than ever, countries from around the world have been making the case for them. It started with President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Mia Mottley and President William Ruto setting out why they are needed. Then, in our event on Tuesday, we launched a new Coalition for Solidarity Levies. Spearheaded by Barbados, Kenya and France, we were joined at the launch by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez (Spain), President Hilda Heine (Marshall Islands), Secretary-General Patricia Scotland (Commonwealth), Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra (European Commission), and many others. We are delighted to welcome 5 new members to the coalition - Fiji, Somalia, Djibouti, Zambia and Sierra Leone - building on Denmark joining a few weeks ago. Our coalition now numbers 17, including 3 observers. This shows there is a growing momentum behind the concept of solidarity levies, as UN Secretary-General António Guterres also noted in his remarks to the High Ambition Coalition. We have made great progress in just one year, and you can find out all about solidarity levies and why they are important in our progress report. It covers levies on aviation, shipping, fossil fuels and financial transactions, alongside ideas for cryptocurrency and plastics. This is just the beginning. Over the next year, we will put forward proposals for solidarity levies on many of these sectors, and build on our work to create coalitions of the willing, who are ready to act and introduce such levies. Under the leadership of France, Kenya and Barbados, we are looking forward to see what we can achieve in the next 12 months, as we begin our journey to COP30 in Brazil. https://lnkd.in/ddcuKaQD

The increasing cost of climate damages demands urgent action and polluting industries must do more. We know how to scale up climate and development finance – solidarity levies 📈 As we kick off New York Climate Week, It’s time to act ⏰ We are calling on countries to join the Global Solidarity Levies Task Force: For People and the Planet to support these levies 🤝 This weekend, the task force featured at the Summit of the Future action days with UNDP and United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, on ‘A Sustainable Future for All’. Our task force advisor Dr Pep Bardouille, Director of Bridgetown Initiative and Special Adviser on Climate Resilience in Barbados, spoke at the Project Syndicate alongside Mia Amor Mottley. Later this week, the task force will feature at events by #4P, Global Citizen, International Peace Institute (IPI), and Oxford Climate Policy. And we have an in-person sherpa meeting of task force members! Stay tuned for more updates.

While coal, oil, and gas companies account for more than 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the five biggest oil and gas firms have made $281bn profits in the past two years. Polluters must pay. Could a windfall levy on fossil fuel companies be a new source of much-needed #climatefinance?

The task force is researching how revenue to fight the #climatecrisis could be raised equitably by taxing a large volume of financial transactions at a low rate. Our research will look to minimise the impact on financial markets and help us build a more balanced financial system. Follow our page for updates.

Last week 110 countries voted in favour of a UN tax convention that will address environmental levies, among other issues, if adopted. The aim is to help nations around the world boost economic growth and achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 goals. The task force is following the UN’s work, as it builds up to seeking final approval at UNGA in September. Read more below: https://lnkd.in/dNiv8kQ5

The number of airline passengers has increased exponentially since 1945, with a record of 4 billion passengers a year in 2019. To raise #climatefinance, the task force is looking into the possibility of a passenger levy on first class or business class flights ✈️

International shipping is a highly polluting sector, accounting for 2-3% of total greenhouse gas emissions. The task force is following the discussions underway at the International Maritime Organization on how a shipping levy could raise funds to tackle #climatechange and restore balance to the global financial system by ensuring #polluterspay 🚢
