The Global Supply Chain Institute (GSCI) shapes and influences the practice of supply chain management by serving as the preeminent global hub for leading practitioners, academics, and students to learn, network, and connect. Who We Are Driven by our Volunteer spirit and our passion for understanding and impacting how things really work, the Global Supply Chain Institute at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, wants to partner with companies to help identify their supply chain management (SCM) strategy and develop their people. It was in this spirit of engagement and impact that the departments of supply chain management and graduate and executive education in the Haslam College of Business created the Global Supply Chain Institute to extend relationships to industry and to drive an impact on the profession. Our engagement with industry fuels our research and colors the curriculum we teach. We recently welcomed a cohort of managers from Chick-fil-A Corporate Support Center to Knoxville as part of a customized SCM Leadership Academy, a 14-week course designed to develop #supplychain professionals into leaders who can drive immediate value for their organizations. More than 30 participants were on campus to participate in learning sessions with Haslam College of Business faculty and program leaders, including Ted Stank, Thomas Goldsby, Darrell Edwards, Izabela VanDeest, CPA and Kelle Knight. As Fall 2024 concludes, TASC reflects on a remarkable semester of growth, engagement, and professional development for our 200+ members! This semester, our organization partnered with leading companies in the supply chain industry, including PepsiCo, HF Sinclair, Nike, Shaw Industries, Clayton Homes Inc., FedEx, and more, offering members numerous opportunities to connect with representatives and learn about various interesting topics, such as working within integrated supply chain systems, Lean Six Sigma principles, and how businesses shape their culture and strategy. 🌟Fall 2024 highlights include: - Sustainable Supply Chain Management: Dr. John E. Bell, head of the SCM Department in Haslam, shared his insights on sustainable practices in the field - YPC Panel Event: A sophomore-led event organized by TASC's Young Professionals Committee (YPC) featuring ExxonMobil, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and Nissan Motor Corporation, built on the committee's semester-long initiative last academic year as freshmen to explore supply networks across diverse industries - Supply Continuity Risk Activity: Members participated in an interactive activity with Chick-fil-A Supply, simulating end-to-end supply chain processes by creating paper cows to emphasize the importance of quality and efficiency at each stage - Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Coffee Chat: Women in TASC engaged in discussions on inclusivity and women in leadership with Darcy MacClaren, SAP Digital Supply Chain's Chief Revenue Officer - SCM Crash Course: Members gained foundational knowledge and practical skills to maximize opportunities in Haslam for academic and career success - Supply Chain Management Field Day: TASC and the SCM department worked together to successfully launch the first-ever Supply Chain Management Field Day, creating a fun and engaging space for students, faculty, and the supply chain community to connect and collaborate TASC members also leveraged the organization's strong involvement with Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee’s SCM department and the Global Supply Chain Institute at the University of Tennessee to access a broad range of career advancement and professional development opportunities beyond our events. This fall, members participated in career fairs and site visits, including trips to Procter & Gamble and Smurfit Westrock. Additionally, TASC organized a Percentage Night fundraiser to support seniors in taking the SCPro Level 1 certification exam, with additional funding from the department to ensure accessibility. This semester reflects TASC’s mission to equip students with the tools, knowledge, and networks for success in supply chain management. Thank you to our members for an incredible fall — we’re excited to build on this momentum in the spring!

Consumer-goods supplier Reckitt Benckiser is looking to respond faster to shifts in demand for over-the-counter pharmaceuticals by moving more of its manufacturing to the United States. The investment is an example of attempts by companies to brace their #supplychains against ocean-shipping snarls, factory shutdowns and parts shortages, according to Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee professor Justin Kistler, an expert on healthcare supply chains. Earlier this month, Kistler spoke with The Wall Street Journal about the increasing demand for cold medicines in post-pandemic pharma and the challenges and opportunities for manufacturers.
