"It will get worse, before it gets better and we will be looking at 2024 as a quite harmonious year. That is the harsh reality we are facing," says PIK director Johan Rockström. While 2024 was the most expensive year ever in terms of extreme events hitting the economies around the world, it would not stop there, Rockström explains. Within the next 10 years, it will be very likely that global warming goes beyond 1.5 degrees, he tells the World Economic Forum, leading to an overshoot period of at least 30-40 years. This will "take us to 1.6, 1.7, 1.8 degrees before we potentially come back to 1.5, if we are able to decarbonize the global economy."
#Climatechange could slash almost 20% from global GDP by 2050. Businesses can act to embed climate #resilience across their operations now - and the transition to #sustainability is an opportunity rather than a sacrifice, says Johan Rockström, Director of PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. The World Economic Forum report Business on the Edge: Building Industry Resilience to Climate Hazards, produced with Accenture, provides a roadmap to help #businesses move forward amid the #climate crisis.
