Congratulations Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi! San Francisco’s Federal Building, which houses Democratic Representative of the 11th District Nancy’s local office, will bear her name. The dedication ceremony for the 18-story Federal Building is today, December 2. As of 2023, only 30% of San Francisco’s public buildings are named after women. The city owns 92 buildings, 70% of which are named after men. Buildings have reached the goals of the city’s 2018 ordinance 243-18 to increase women’s representation in public spaces, such as art pieces, street names, building names, and park names. However, to reach true parity between men and women there would need to be 35 new buildings named after women. Currently, women are represented in 21% of art pieces, 7% of street names, 30% of building names and 24% of park names. These statistics do not include the recent unveilings of statues of Dr. Maya Angelou and Toni Stone and the streets (Dr. May Angelou Lane and Toni Stone Xing) that bear their names. It also does not include the temporary statue of a Black runner, “As Sounds Turn to Noise,” by British artist Thomas J. Price. The bronze statue is on loan to the San Francisco Arts Commission, and presented in partnership with the Port of San Francisco, through January 2025. To meet the ordinance’s goal for true parity in public art, street names, building names, and park names, the city would need to add 21 pieces of art, 200 streets, and 14 parks named solely after women. Congratulations to the 50 women who are making history today, December 2. For the first time in history, women hold nearly half of the seats in both the Senate and the State Assembly as the Golden State’s 120 legislators reconvene in Sacramento, California’s capital. Celebrating, Assemblywoman Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, called the electoral win a “significant victory for California women.” The Davis representative is also the incoming chairperson of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus. “Tomorrow, we continue to push so that every young girl who is sitting back and watching these moments unfold, will see one day she too can change the world,” she said. It’s not overall parity. The state’s governing body is shy a few seats for women. However, California is one of six states that has achieved gender parity in one or more of its houses of government in this election, according to Debbie Walsh, director of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University. Most of the incoming lawmakers are Democratic women. Republican women picked up two seats in the Senate. It is “a significant step forward in advancing women’s leadership,” Parmis Khatibi, president of the California Women’s Leadership Association, a group that primarily supports Republican candidates, said celebrating, it ensures “our government reflects the diversity of our communities.”   Aguiar-Curry said, “The big question for me is: how are we going to use our power?” Unfortunately, San Francisco, isn’t represented by a woman in the State Legislature. Go Roam Tours honors World AIDS Day remembering: Ruth Brinker   In the early days of the HIV/AIDS crisis, Ruth, a San Franciscan who watched a young architect she knew die from complications created by the virus. She organized a group of volunteers to check in on him and bring food to him.   “I was absolutely shattered to see how quickly he became unable to take care of himself,” Ruth recalled in the short documentary, “The Ruth Brinker Story.”   “I began worrying about all the other people in the city who I knew had AIDS,” she continued stating that she wondered how they were defending themselves against the deadly virus.   It was 1985. Fear, panic, and homophobia gripped the United States as the new virus, originally named GRID (Gay-Related Immune Deficiency), ravaged communities of gay men in major cities across the United States and the world for four years at this point.   Ruth wasn’t scared. She responded with compassion.   “I just felt compelled to start a meal service for them,” she said about the service that started out of her kitchen.   She was possibly inspired by her earlier work managing a Meals on Wheels center and as the director for a homeless food program at Trinity Church.   Project Open Hand was founded out of her kitchen with a hand full of volunteers helping seven neighbors in 1985. The organization quickly grew expanding to include Alameda County and partnering with organizations, like the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.   Today, POH prepares 2,500 nutritious meals and provides 200 bags of healthy groceries with the help of more than 125 volunteers to help sustain its clients as they battle serious illnesses, isolation, or the health challenges of aging daily. Ruth’s legacy reminds us that compassion can change lives. “Ray of Light” Michelle Henry Born: May 26, 1998 Death: May 15, 2024, San Francisco, California San Francisco’s transgender community was shocked by the brutal murder of transgender activist Michelle Henry, 25, a Black transgender lesbian activist, in her home on May 15. SF police officers found Michelle’s body with multiple stab wounds. Police detained Raymani Yuhashi, 33, but they were later released. No charges were filed. The SF District Attorney’s office is investigating Michelle’s murder. Michelle is at least the 15th transgender or gender-expansive person to lose their life to fatal violence in 2024, according to the Human Rights Campaign. Like many transgender people, Michelle moved to SF to start a new life three years ago, friends said. She was deeply involved in SF’s transgender, lesbian, and youth communities, especially at the SF LGBT Center’s youth program. She volunteered her time and energy toward fostering a sisterhood where transgender women of color could feel loved and supported, friends said. Michelle was “a cherished member of our community," wrote Honey Mahogany, director of the Office of Transgender Initiatives, City and County of San Francisco, said. “Michelle's death is a profound loss for our community,” Rebecca Rolfe, executive director of the center, said. "Her warmth and presence were felt in every room she walked in.”   “There are no words to fully convey what we are collectively feeling right now, our grief is immense,” Rebecca added. Community members gathered for a vigil at Mother Bar in the Mission on May 21. Michelle was laid to rest on June 15. HRC declared a National State of Emergency for LGBTQ+ Americans in 2023 due to 550+ anti-LGBTQ bills introduced into state houses that year, over 80 of which were signed into law—more than in any other year. Since the beginning of this year, nearly anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced into state houses, with 33 signed into law. Go Roam Tours is in the Big Apple this week attending the first-ever TripCon, a four-day conference for tour guides and tour operators. I was totally inspired by the many thought provoking workshops about diversity and inclusion, how tour guides can be social change leaders, the state of the tour guide industry, along with a lot of nuts and bolts workshops and much more. It was empowering to be around tour industry leaders to independent small tour operators and independent tour guides connecting and sharing ideas all in one conference in Brooklyn’s Dumbo neighborhood. I was especially touched to meet other journalists who have transitioned into being tour guides. Women had a strong presence at TripCon taking the stage. Beth Santos of Wanderful talked about women being a force in travel and Zakia Moulaoui Guery of Invisible Cities talked about tour guides being a force for social change. Kaitlin Calogera of A Tour Of Her Own and Miriam Bourin of Destination America (DMC) hosted a candid talk about the tour guide/experiences industry. Anna Cashman, B2B brand and insights lead at GetYourGuide, provided profound insights on who travelers are (pssst … solo women travelers) and Saturday Night Live’s choreographer and director Shannon Lewis and writer, actor, and producer Douglas Lyons talked about stage presence, body language, and storytelling. TripCon was created by TripSchool founders Alan Armijo and Mitch Bach. The next TripCon is November 10-13, 2025, in Charleston, South Carolina. Registration is open: https://lnkd.in/eSJANgb3. #tripcon2024 #tripcon #tripschool #tourguides #tourguide #touroperator #touroperators #tourism #hospitality #tours #experiences #travel #vacation

    • Beth Santos of Wanderful laid down the big fat number that 85% of women make travel decisions, but representation hasn’t caught up during her presentation at the first annual TripCon on November 11-14, 2024 in Brooklyn, New York.
    • TripCon sponsor Get Your Guide’s B2B brand and insights lead Anna Cashman broke down the latest data about who travelers are and how to market to them using the company’s insights during her presentation at the first annual TripCon on November 11-14, 2024 in Brooklyn, New York.
    • Kaitlin Calogera of A Tour of Her Own and Miriam Bourin of Destination America hosted a candid talk about the tour guide/experiences industry at the first annual TripCon on November 11-14, 2024 in Brooklyn, New York.
    • Some of the members of the third cohort to graduate from the Pathways Project, an organization co-organized by TripSchool, Travel Cares, and Civil Rights Trail Tours to attract, educate, and support Black, brown, indigenous, and people of color in tour and experiences industry, stood up to be recognized at the first annual TripCon on November 11-14, 2024 in Brooklyn, New York.
    • Zakia Moulaoui Guery of Invisible City Tours talked about tour guides being a force for social change and the development of her tour company which trains and hires formerly homeless people how to become tour guides in Glasgow, Scotland, during her presentation at the first annual TripCon on November 11-14, 2024 in Brooklyn, New York. She talked about a marketing campaign that went viral where she put posters of where homeless people sleep around the city that caught people’s attention and spread like wildfire on social media and in the media.

Award-winning investigative reporter Nikole Hannah-Jones, best known for The 1619 Project, will speak at City Arts & Lectures in San Francisco in November. The New York Times Magazine civil rights and racial injustice reporter is promoting her new book, "The 1619 Project: A Visual Experience."   "The 1619 Project: A Visual Experience" is an illustrated book that brings to life a fuller, more comprehensive understanding of American history and culture through newly commissioned original artwork by thirteen Black artists like Carrie Mae Weems, Calida Rawles, Vitus Shell, Xaviera Simmons, and archival images. The works along with powerful essays and vignettes from the original edition, written by some of the most brilliant journalists, scholars, and thinkers of our time reframe the American founding and its contemporary echoes, placing slavery and resistance at the center of the American story.    Nikole is also the Knight Chair in Race and Journalism at Howard University where she is the founding director of the Center for Journalism & Democracy. She also co-founded the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting, a training and mentorship organization geared toward increasing the number of investigative reporters of color, in 2016.   The event is co-presented with the Museum of the African Diaspora. 📆: Friday, November 22, 2024 ⏰: 7:30pm 📍: Sydney Goldstein Theater, 275 Hayes St, San Francisco, CA 94102 🎟: $54 per person 📻: KQED will broadcast the conversation for free on December 15, 2024.
