In 2016 — eight years before energy-guzzling data centers provoked a public outcry — we published an exposé detailing the billions of dollars flowing to companies — especially tech giants like Amazon, Google and Microsoft — to build data centers. The costs, we revealed, were almost $2 million per job, more than a small town may spend in an entire year on street improvements. The same year, we revealed billions more in subsidies going to Amazon warehouses, and would soon publish an interactive map showing that the warehouses locate between trucking hubs and wealthy ZIP codes with lots of Prime subscribers. No group was more critical of Amazon’s HQ2 auction than we were (and the company was bracing for our reactions, as Brad Stone’s Amazon Unbound later reported). Our work on Amazon continues unabated. The Opportunity Zones program, which gives federal tax breaks to the wealthiest individuals and corporations, could be extended beyond 2026. Read our take on how the program (which in most places also gives additional *state" tax breaks) must change to make sure it drives investment to places that actually need it: https://lnkd.in/gBjxkcVx #OpportunityZones #EconomicDevelopment #TaxBreaks

Good use of our Violation Tracker database to show how many times Elon Musk has paid out fines related to cheating workers, harming the environment, defrauding the government and more. Per USA TODAY: "According to Good Jobs First, a national policy watchdog, Tesla has been forced to pay nearly $100 million in 73 enforcement actions by the Justice Department, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Labor Department and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Musk − and Ramaswamy − also could propose policy changes that allow them to save huge sums of money by cutting red tape and regulations designed to protect consumers and the environment. Good Jobs First's tally shows SpaceX has been penalized $4.2 million over safety, labor, environmental and aerospace violations." And don't forget the billions Musk has gotten in government subsidies and bailouts - see some of those in our Subsidy Tracker database. https://lnkd.in/gtG8vmRX

Over 26 years, Good Jobs First has demonstrated that subsidy transparency is a cornerstone of equitable economic development. Indeed, we have issued more national studies on state and local subsidy transparency than on any other subject. But this is our first to look specifically at small- and medium-sized cities. It is also our first attempt to evaluate *pre-approval* transparency at the local level. In all, we looked at 229 cities, evaluating the transparency practices of one major locally controlled incentive program. Though we find just 11% of the cities we surveyed have transparent pre- and post-approval processes, we learned through 60 interviews with economic development practitioners the desire to improve economic development practices. In the next phase, we’re excited to partner with communities nationwide to help make economic development more transparent and fair. In the meantime, we recommend that local officials give at least 60 days’ notice about project details before public hearings and make it easy for residents to get advance email alerts about related actions. And be sure to explore our other databases, including Violation Tracker (U.S.) and Violation Tracker UK. https://lnkd.in/gtx6wdCU
Violation Tracker, one of my favorite sites to research corporate wrongdoing, is going global. That is, it's adding in international violations of large companies, not just those occurring in the U.S. and brought by U.S. regulators. Sounds like there are some data gaps based on the reporting in other countries, but a wonderful resource nonetheless . . . and one that will improve over time. From Violation Tracker's announcement: "This unevenness in disclosure practices is part of the reason financial institutions appear so prominently in Violation Tracker Global. The nearly 300 banks, insurance companies, and asset managers included in the database account for more than 40 percent of the total penalties, far more than any other sector. Seven of the 10 parent companies with the largest penalty totals are banks, including Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, UBS, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, and Deutsche Bank. Banks are also the biggest repeat offenders. Looking only at penalties of $1 million or more, the parents with the most cases of that size are UBS (114), Bank of America (111), JPMorgan Chase (101), and Citigroup (98). Two banks, HSBC and Citigroup, have been penalized in more countries than any other parent companies. Plenty of corporations other than banks have substantial penalty totals. These include Volkswagen ($30 billion), BP ($26 billion), and Apple ($19 billion). Overall, 95 parent companies have received $1 billion or more in cumulative penalties since 2010." Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gxaMktUN P.S. I got a chance to meet Philip Mattera from Violation Tracker at this year's Academy of Legal Studies in Business annual conference in DC. Maria Granik and I put together a panel on white collar and corporate crime and Phil was one of our panelists. I highly recommend adding Phil to your list if you're looking for someone to explain the data on wrongdoing in organizations--this is an area where government websites and those of academic institutions aren't nearly as robust as Violation Tracker. Keep up the good work, VT! #violationtracker #corproatecrime #corporategovernance #data
