When Legacy Speaks, the Moment Listens. Earlier this month, at the MBLA Event: Honoring Our Roots, the past, present, and future of Black legal excellence converged in a way that felt almost cinematic. Moderated by the legendary Wayne Budd, the panel featured former Goodwin alum Abim Thomas, alongside the distinguished Courtney Scrubbs and Angela McConney—both former MBLA Presidents who have left an indelible mark on the organization and the legal profession. As they shared their journeys, photos of past MBLA leaders scrolled behind them—appearing at uncanny moments, as if history itself was speaking. Timing is everything. From the powerful opening by Christelle Jean-Felix, introducing a panel where every single person—moderator included—had once served as MBLA President, to Wayne Budd masterful navigation of key moments in MBLA history, the discussion was rich, reflective, and deeply resonant. The themes that carried the night: - Mentorship as a force multiplier—the right guidance can shift the trajectory of a career and a life. - Resilience in the face of challenges—how those who came before overcame obstacles and built pathways for others. - The power of community and connection—leaning on others, lifting as we climb, and recognizing that no one succeeds alone. - Honoring legacy while building the future—acknowledging the work that has been done while ensuring the next generation has even greater opportunities. The energy in the room was undeniable. The panel didn’t just share stories—they engaged, challenged, and inspired. The evening closed with MBLA President Avana A. Epperson-Temple and President-Elect Jameel Moore, offering a bold vision for the future—one built on the foundation of those who paved the way. This wasn’t just an event.
