Drs. Kirsten, Benard and Julius are in Kigali, Rwanda this week attending the launch workshop: “Strengthening One Health PPR in the Greater Virunga Landscape” project (PPR = (pandemic) Prevention, Preparedness & Response). This project is led by the Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration (GVTC) with support from the #PandemicFund. Our teams in all three countries are playing an integral role in strengthening capacity for zoonotic disease surveillance and response in the region.

Conserving wild mountain + Grauer's gorillas through veterinary medicine and science using a One Health approach
About us
Gorilla Doctors is dedicated to saving the mountain and Grauer's gorillas one gorilla patient at a time and is the only group providing these animals with direct, hands-on care in the wild. Our international veterinary team provides medical care to ill and injured mountain and Grauer's gorillas living in the national parks of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). With just over 1,000 mountain gorillas left in the world today, the health and well being of every individual gorilla is vital to the species’ survival. In addition to providing eastern gorillas with healthcare, our veterinary team helps rescue and treat mountain and Grauer’s gorillas orphaned by poachers and conducts research on emerging pandemic threats in human and wildlife populations in Uganda and Rwanda.

Following reports of a respiratory outbreak in Christmas group earlier this month, Dr. Nelson trekked into #Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to conduct a monitoring visit. #Silverback Christmas had been showing the most persistent symptoms but fortunately he has already started showing signs of improving. All of his activities are reported to be at normal levels. We will continue to closely monitor him to track his recovery.

At Gorilla Doctors we are on call 24/7, ready to respond to a gorilla health emergency, rain or shine. Gaspard and Adrien raced into the forest and up the mountain to an elevation of more than 8,500ft (~2,600m). The infant’s family, Hirwa group, had moved nearly 1,000ft (~300m) away and the infant was languishing in the snare, cold and exhausted... Read the full story on our blog!
