Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA)

Over the past eight years, the nation’s traffic safety agency has had a confirmed Administrator for just three months. During that time, more than 275,000 people have died on America’s roads. Even one death is one too many. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA needs a Senate-confirmed leader who can help steer the agency during this critical time in roadway safety. GHSA and other leading safety organizations are urging President-elect Trump to quickly nominate a proven safety leader who can be swiftly confirmed as NHTSA Administrator.

For a small nonprofit, the type of partner we at the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) choose to work with is critically important. A message can often resonate more if you hear it from somewhere unexpected. For example... "Great, another safety organization is asking people to drive safely. Here we go again." 🙄 But mention Amazon during the holiday shopping season and it turns into: "Hey, that's where I get most of my gifts. I'm expecting a package tomorrow. Why are they involved?" 🤔 New partners can help you approach key, recurring messaging difficulties in creative ways and unexpected ways. Like many others, I'm relying on Amazon and its network of delivery partners to help me finish my holiday shopping this year. Today I spoke with nearly two dozen TV and radio stations across the country to remind folks that the packages they've ordered aren't the only precious cargo on the road. While you're eagerly awaiting that special gift for a family member or friend to arrive at your doorstep, someone else is waiting on their loved one to get home safely after delivering your packages. This holiday season, we can all do small things to help keep each other safe, both on the road and at our homes. When driving, slow down in residential areas, avoid distractions and be on the lookout for pedestrians and delivery personnel. And at home, clear your driveways and sidewalks, turn on outdoor lights and secure your pets.   Thank you to Amazon and Eli Pabon for working with the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) to ensure the holidays are joyous and safe for all.

Want to get involved in improving traffic safety? The Behavioral Traffic Safety Cooperative Research Program (#BTSCRP) is soliciting problem statements for FY 2026. Help out by submitting a problem statement identifying a relevant behavioral traffic safety topic that requires more research. The submission deadline is January 17, 2025. A big congratulations to the 19 states and territories that received a State Electronic Data Collection grant from NHTSA to upgrade and standardize their crash data systems. These updates will improve the accuracy, timeliness, and accessibility of fatality information. Quality and timely data is critical to helping states and other stakeholders make decisions on how and where to deploy resources to have the largest impact on safety possible. GHSA was a strong advocate for the creation of this program during the negotiations of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and it’s great to see the program come to fruition.

It’s never too early to start a conversation about distraction. Kids are walking, biking and scooting long before they get behind the wheel. The behaviors they learn at an early age – good or bad – carry over to adulthood. GHSA and State Farm are highlighting tips for parents and guardians of newborns, toddlers, tweens and teens. As divided as our country is about so many things, the numbers show there’s agreement that we have a traffic safety crisis. A recent survey from Pew Research Center found that a majority of Americans view distracted driving, speeding, aggressive driving and drunk driving as major problems in their local community. Nearly four out of every five people think drivers distracted by their cellphones are a major problem. One-quarter of those surveyed said they see road rage very or extremely often. It’s clear we have a safety problem on our roads. It’s imperative we work together to harness this broad agreement about the problem and turn it into a solution.
