We provide a loving home for indigent, homeless and abandoned individuals at the end of life.
About us
Grace House Akron (GHA) is grounded in the knowledge that there are too many individuals in our community, who are at the end of life, with nowhere to go, and no one to care for them. We believe that everyone deserves to die in the presence of care, compassion, and dignity, and that no one should die alone. Our mission is to provide a loving home for indigent, homeless and abandoned individuals at the end of life. Our vision is to provide access to compassionate care and comfort, at the end of life for anyone in the greater Akron area, at no cost. We fulfill our mission and vision by providing those at the end of life, in conjunction with partner hospice teams, a nurturing environment, basic physical needs (food, safe shelter and personal care), dignity, comfort and compassion, and emotional and spiritual support. GHA serves vulnerable, hospice enrolled adults in Summit County, with terminal illnesses, who are without caregiver support and would otherwise spend their final days alone and/ or in undesirable conditions. Risk factors include homelessness, housing insecure, mental health issues, addiction disorders, abandoned or friendless, poverty/indigency; veteran or refugee status, disability and addiction/ dependency.

We hope you enjoyed your holiday. We wanted to share some big news as we approach the end of 2024. We published an article in the Journal of Palliative Medicine. The article highlights the development of Grace House and the adjustments we've made to overcome challenges we faced along the road to the success of Grace House. Thank you to Steven (Skip) Radwany, Barbara Palmisano, and Cole Thompson for working alongside me for this to come to fruition. This article will be spread nationwide; we hope that by sharing our story, we can continue the momentum to bring more awareness to the need for Grace House and hope for expansion to bring our experience and benefits to additional communities. Check out the article here. https://buff.ly/3ZFB5pn

One of our Volunteers shared a conversation he had with Kelly's Daughter. He asked her to tell him about one of the best days you've had with your mom, and she said it was here at Grace House. She stated it was a day she had off from work and had nothing to do, so she came to sit with her mom. She continuously reminded her mom how much she loved her and how much she meant to her. They were facing financial burdens as so many of us do, especially this time of year, and the stress was getting to her, but our community rallied behind her to help her get through it. We cannot express how much this story means to us. It warms our hearts to take away some of their stress and provide some peace in their lives, allowing them to simply sit and enjoy each other's company.

A HUGE thank you goes out to the Northern Ohio Golf Charities Foundation. They chose to help support Grace House Akron this #GivingTuesday by sharing the different avenues in which they could contribute to our mission. Check out all the very kind donations they dropped off to us from our Amazon Wishlist. We are deeply grateful for their support this year, helping us reach a wider audience and raise awareness about Grace House's mission.

National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day, December 21st, the longest night of the year across the country, communities rally together to honor and remember people who have died on the streets. This day is important because every life deserves to be remembered, but it also brings awareness to the lives of unhoused people, and together, we can strive to end homelessness. Let today be a day of reflecting on the lives lost due to harsh weather conditions, violence, or potentially treatable health conditions, all of the above being situations that, with proper housing, their deaths could have been preventable. Everyone deserves to die with dignity, and no one deserves to die alone. #GraceHouseAkron #NationalHomelessPersonsMemorialDay

Please Welcome Karen, our Kitchen Coordinator. She is already making a huge difference here, organizing and developing an effective flow in our kitchen. We asked Karen why she wanted to join the team here; she said she enjoys cooking and comforting those who come to Grace House, ensuring no one feels alone. She has been a great addition to our team. We're excited to have her here! We wish everyone a safe and joyful holiday, from our Grace House family to yours. Soak up all the little precious moments with your family and friends.
