WOWT announced that veteran First Alert 6 investigative reporter and weekend co-anchor Brian Mastre will take over as main co-anchor of First Alert 6, after John Knicely’s retirement. “Brian is a veteran reporter and anchor who has established a standard of professional journalism which few can match. His storytelling history is impressive, and he is the ideal person to carry on the legacy of excellent anchoring by John Knicely and put his own stamp on the job,” First Alert 6 President and General Manager Jim McKernan said. Brian Mastre is very familiar to Nebraska and Iowa viewers. Brian joined WOWT in 1997 and has become one of Omaha’s most respected broadcasters. “For more than 25 years, I’ve had the privilege to work alongside some of the finest journalists in our profession,”Mastre said. “Trust is earned with viewers, and our responsibility never changes; deliver fact-based news as clearly and honestly as possible. I look forward to continuing this important mission at the First Alert 6 anchor desk.”

🏒🔥 What a night! WDBJ7 was proud to partner with Guns and Hoses for the 21st Annual Charity Hockey Game! Roanoke Valley Police Officers and Firefighters hit the ice for a great cause, raising funds for the ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation to support kids battling cancer. With an electric crowd cheering them on, First Alert Hometown Weather meteorologist Leo Hirsbrunner led the Hoses to victory for the seventh time, while anchor Logan Sherrill kept the energy high as emcee. But the real winner of the night? The incredible support for charity!

Longtime First Alert 6 anchor and Nebraska broadcasting icon John Knicely has announced his plan to retire. After a stellar career as Omaha’s Main News Anchor, John will sign off from the First Alert 6 anchor desk on Wednesday, March 12. “Over 50 years ago, my thoughts in college were to probably go to law school. But a call from my journalism professor about a weekend sports job at Channel 6 changed all that,” John said. “It was a blessing then and that has continued through more than five decades in broadcasting. It’s been a privilege that has led to many opportunities for me and my wife Sue to serve and be involved in such a great community. Our sincere thanks!” John recently celebrated his 50th Anniversary working in television. Of those 50 years, 40 have been with WOWT. THANK YOU for everything, John. We will certainly miss you, but we wish you all the best in your retirement! #GrayProud
