At yesterday’s Dredged Material Management Program Executive Committee Meeting, Maryland Port Administration Executive Director Jonathan Daniels updated Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld and other committee members on ongoing dredging projects including the next frontier of coastal restoration, the Mid Bay Project. Mid Bay will rebuild James and Barren islands using sediment dredged from Port of Baltimore shipping channels. The Maryland Port Administration is the largest creator of wetlands in Maryland through its dredging program. Other dredging projects including Poplar Island, Hart Miller Island, and Masonville have created strong wildlife and waterfowl habitats. Today’s ceremony commemorating Veteran’s Day at the Arlington National Cemetery was attended by President Biden and the Secretary of Veterans Affairs Denis McDonough. Few Americans know of the contribution of the U.S. Merchant Marine which in time of war is controlled by the Department of Defense and as has a wreath placed by the President at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider in memory of those who lost their lives. GLDD salutes our Veterans on this Veteran’s Day. We must never forget the sacrifice of those who fought for our freedoms.
