About us
The Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (GLS) is a wholly owned government corporation created by statute on May 13, 1954, to construct, operate, and maintain that part of the St. Lawrence Seaway between the Port of Montreal and Lake Erie, within the territorial limits of the United States. Trade development functions aim to enhance Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway System utilization without respect to territorial or geographic limits. The mission of the Corporation is to serve the U.S. intermodal and international transportation system by improving the operation and maintenance of a safe, reliable, efficient, and environmentally responsible deep-draft waterway, in cooperation with its Canadian counterpart. The GLS also encourages the development of trade through the Great Lakes Seaway System, which contributes to the comprehensive economic and environmental development of the entire Great Lakes region. The GLS headquarters staff offices are located in Washington, D.C. Operations are located at the two U.S. Seaway locks (Eisenhower and Snell) in Massena, N.Y.

👏Congratulations, #GreatLakesRegion👏 📢 #ICYMI: The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) has awarded $77.3 million in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) grants to the following #GreatLakesPorts and regional projects: ✨Port of Chicago, Ill.➡️expected to receive $34,508,933 to rehabilitate roughly 3,000 feet of a dock wall, construct roughly three new heavy-lift crane pads, and add approximately 1,700 feet of new rail spur at the Iroquois Landing Terminal. ✨Drummond Island, Mich.➡️expected to receive $10,154,024 to purchase a shiploader for Dolomite and Seaway, aggregate terminal improvements for domestic movements in the Lakes. ✨Port of Oswego Authority➡️expected to receive $11,250,000 for a climate-controlled Port Warehouse that will allow expansion of storage capacity/capability for active Seaway port. ✨Put-in-Bay, Ohio➡️expected to receive $10,371,073 for a stone breakwall to protect ferry dock and added berth for redundancy in poor weather. ✨Erie-Western PA Port Authority ➡️expected to receive $11,250,000 for construction of a roughly 406-foot stone breakwall, which will serve to protect the existing ferry dock. 🔗View a list of all project awards https://lnkd.in/eNA3WFaU... #GreatLakesPorts #SeawayInvestments #SupplyChain #PIDP

This celebrated vessel, originally built in 1958, will now serve as a training platform for the Academy’s maritime students, fostering the education of future mariners. ✨During today's ceremony, GLS Administrator Adam T.-Schlicht, Great Lakes Maritime Academy Superintendent Jerry Achenbach, and U.S. Coast Guard Ninth District (Great Lakes) Rear Admiral Jon Hickey made remarks and were joined by former and current GLS employees who have served aboard the ROBINSON BAY. 🎤GLS Administrator Tindall-Schlicht highlighted the importance of this donation, stating, “By placing this iconic tugboat in the hands of an institution dedicated to maritime excellence, we are ensuring that the ROBINSON BAY remains an active part of the Great Lakes maritime community, contributing to both its legacy and its future. ✨Did you Know?✨ROBINSON BAY is named for the Robinson family, one of the founding families of Massena Center. 🌉Bonus Fact: The most famous of the Robinson family was grandson, Holton Duncan Robinson, born in Massena on February 7, 1863. Holton was a world-renowned suspension bridge engineer who helped design and build hundreds of aerodynamically stable cable suspension bridges worldwide.
