David Goggins wasn’t supposed to be a Navy SEAL. He wasn’t supposed to be an ultramarathon runner, a world record holder, or a bestselling author. By all accounts, David was supposed to be broken—defeated by a world that had shown him little mercy. Growing up in a grueling environment, David faced hardships at home that left lasting emotional scars. School wasn’t much easier; he struggled with severe learning disabilities and was often ridiculed by his peers. In his twenties, David had given up on himself. He was overweight, depressed, and working a dead-end job, living day to day with no hope for the future. But David isn’t someone who stays down. One night, as he watched TV about Navy SEALs, something inside him lit up. The journey that followed was nothing short of grueling and impossible to fully describe in one LinkedIn post. David had to lose over 100 pounds in just a few months to even qualify for SEAL training. “When you go from 297 pounds to 191 pounds in that time period, and you're running, you're starting to break yourself,” David recalled. “So I broke myself before I even got into Navy SEAL training.” David’s determination carried him into “Hell Week”—the brutal mental and physical test that separates those who are ready to become SEALs. Despite experiencing pneumonia and fracturing his kneecap...on his third attempt, David successfully completed Hell Week with BUD/S Class 235 and earned his Navy SEAL trident on August 10, 2001. Less than a month later, after the 9/11 attacks, David deployed to Iraq with SEAL Team Five and served as a training instructor. But the story doesn’t end there. David became an ultramarathon runner, set a world record for the most pull-ups in 24 hours, and wrote the bestselling book Can’t Hurt Me, inspiring millions. He refused to let the world dictate who he could be. Instead, he turned pain into power and proved that no matter where you start, you have the strength to rise, fight back, and create the life you want.
