GreatSchools.org is closely monitoring the Department of Government Efficiency’s decision to abruptly cancel nearly all Institute of Education Sciences (IES) contracts. This is concerning, as schools and districts nationwide rely on IES research to assess strengths and opportunities — as do millions of parents to make informed decisions about their child’s education. As we evaluate the impact of this decision on our work and await more details, we recognize the trust that families and communities place in us to connect them with high-quality data. Our longstanding relationships with the 51 state departments of education will be critical as we work to mitigate the fallout of this decision and continue to provide the most reliable school information.
Chronic absenteeism has never been higher. In fact, absences have doubled from 2019 to 2022 and is seen as a spillover from the pandemic. Without a doubt, this is a major concern in schools across the country. While there is ongoing research on what can be done to keep attendance steady, Michael Gottfried, a professor in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania suggests that supporting teachers, as well as students, could help bring students back to class and keep them there. A recent census-balanced survey of 2,873 parents of school aged children, conducted by National School Choice Week found that 60% of parents considered new or different schools for at least one of their kids. Among them, 68% and 63% were Black and Hispanic parents (respectively); 71% were parents aged 18-29; and 60% of those who did enroll in new schools chose public schools.
