📢 Position Paper: Addressing Kosovo’s Misrepresentation in North Macedonian Energy Reports Green Energy Kosova (GEK) has published a position paper addressing the misrepresentation of Kosovo in official energy reports by North Macedonian institutions. This misrepresentation disregards Kosovo's sovereignty, independence since 2008, and the strong bilateral relations between Kosovo and North Macedonia. Accurate representation is essential for trust, cooperation, and regional energy development. We urge North Macedonian institutions to: ✅ Correct erroneous depictions. ✅ Align reports with international and bilateral realities. ✅ Strengthen cooperation between our countries. Kosovo must be represented accurately and fairly in all platforms and forums! 💚 📄 Read the full position paper here: https://lnkd.in/dX8e8StC #Kosovo #NorthMacedonia #EnergyReports #GreenEnergyKosova #DiplomaticRelations #AccurateRepresentation

Curious about Kosovo’s progress and challenges in energy policy, environmental protection, and climate action? The European Commission’s latest report offers key insights from advancements in renewable energy to the crucial steps still needed for decarbonization. 🌍

📄 The European Commission’s latest report highlights Kosovo's progress in energy policy, environmental protection, and climate action. While there have been promising advancements, further efforts are needed to reduce reliance on outdated coal plants and liberalize the electricity market. Progress shown: - Kosovo launched a day-ahead electricity market and market coupling with Albania, a pioneering move within the Energy Community. - The Law on Renewable Energy Sources was enacted, paving the way for renewable energy auctions. Kosovo’s first solar auction closed with a 30-year concession and a 15-year power purchase agreement, while the first wind auction is in progress. - Energy efficiency has made strides thanks to EU support, including new financial models for residential investments and upgraded building standards. - Environmental improvements include reducing illegal dumpsites by over 50% and advancing waste management with the “polluter pays” principle and a deposit refund system. - On climate, Kosovo adopted its first Climate Change Law and has begun initial climate adaptation measures. Challenges ahead: - Energy Market Structure: The outdated bulk supply agreement between KESCO and KEK remains unresolved, limiting market competitiveness. Retail market liberalization is also progressing slowly, especially for vulnerable consumers. - Environmental Compliance: Kosovo urgently needs to align with EU directives on emissions and industrial pollution. Limited inspection and capacity resources hinder effective policy implementation. The environmental protection strategy (2022-2033) is still pending. - Climate Goals: Kosovo has yet to set a 2050 climate neutrality target, and strategies for decarbonization and adaptation are overdue. To move forward, Kosovo needs a solid MRVA framework for tracking and managing greenhouse gas emissions, along with a carbon pricing system that aligns with the EU’s requirements. Embracing the EU’s “Fit for 55” climate targets and building stronger institutions will be essential. Kosovo’s path to sustainability will require a strong, ongoing commitment to closing policy gaps, strengthening institutional capacity, and aligning with EU energy, environmental, and climate standards. The upcoming NECP and continued progress on the energy strategy will be essential to maintaining momentum. 🌱 To read more, access the full report here: https://lnkd.in/du3na8zg

Green Energy Kosova (GEK) was part of a 13-member delegation from Kosovo, organized by the USAID Kosovo Adapt Activity, to participate in the Future Green City Congress (FGCC'24) in Utrecht, Netherlands. The delegation brought together representatives from GEK, academia, mayors from across Kosovo, and other key stakeholders, making it a truly diverse and impactful group. The congress was an incredible opportunity to connect with experts from 59 countries, all sharing insights on sustainable urban development, the circular economy, climate adaptation, and water management. 🌿 Over the four days, we dove into interactive sessions, explored innovative green infrastructure solutions through field trips, and took part in thought-provoking discussions on climate resilience and adaptation. We’re excited to bring back these global best practices and implement them in our ongoing efforts to promote sustainability and a greener future for Kosovo. 💡 A huge thank you to USAID Kosovo Adapt Activity for making this experience possible and for creating a platform for such meaningful exchanges. Events like FGCC'24 renew our passion and commitment to drive Kosovo’s energy transformation towards a sustainable and eco-friendly future.

*Update* After thorough verification, it turns out that an error in the Energy Regulatory Report's English and Albanian versions contributed to the apparent anomaly seen in the data. My suggestion of a data error stands, emphasizing that relevant institutions, in this case, the Energy Regulatory Office, should exercise greater caution when publishing official data. ☀ Check out my new report on "Exploring the Potential of Solar Photovoltaics (PV) in Kosovo's energy sector". I delve into our distribution grid's unique challenges, especially highlighted by the anomalous surge in PV generation in 2022. - 2022 Anomalies: An unexpected spike in PV generation in 2022, with some projects producing over 100 times their expected output. This raises questions about data accuracy, grid management, and possible temporary regulatory adjustments. - Infrastructure Challenges: The sharp decline in PV generation in 2023 underscores the need for a more resilient and adaptive distribution grid capable of integrating increasing amounts of renewable energy. - Future Pathways: For Kosovo to achieve its 2031 energy goals, it is essential to address these inconsistencies and bolster the grid's capacity. The report is a call to action for stakeholders to prioritize grid upgrades and data transparency, ensuring a stable and sustainable future for Kosovo's solar energy ambitions.
