For Green Impact Account Executive Emma Griffith, sustainability has become a hands-on experience as she works to renovate a property she recently purchased. Her fixer-upper is a three-story house sitting on a small plot of land in West Virginia, which she lovingly refers to as “the shack”. Having been neglected for a long time, the property needs some serious work, but Emma says that when she went inside, “[she] saw some of the woodwork and loved it. There are so many bones that are still good even if the foundation isn’t in the best shape”. This spark of potential is the reason she decided to save as much of the original material as possible. “With deconstruction, you take the building apart piece by piece and try to save what you can. Some of it will go to the landfill, but the rest will be recycled and reused”, Emma explains. Emma credits her sustainable approach to the work she does with Green Impact. “I’m not sure I would’ve had such a strong instinct to save and recycle the materials if I hadn’t been in the sustainability industry. Being in this world has enabled me to be more aware of the problems we as a country face in terms of pollution and waste”, Emma shared. Her connections in sustainability have provided an unexpected community as well. “Because I travel to so many conferences, I have seen how sustainability works in different areas of life. I’ve met other people who are renovating and deconstructing their own properties, so we can exchange tips too,” she says. Emma’s passion project is just getting started, but her vision of a sustainable home that incorporates original woodwork speaks to the determination, energy, and attention to detail that Emma embodies in her work and life.
