According to the findings of a survey conducted in 2022, climate change is considered to be the greatest challenge facing humanity in the 21st century. Yet only 30% of countries have a law, strategy or plan dedicated to climate change education. And of these, these measures are mainly to be found in the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, rather than in those most responsible for the emissions that cause it. It's essential that climate change education is integrated into initial and in-service teacher training, whatever the subject or school level. So why is it that in these countries (including France), it's so difficult to implement this kind of teaching? In a survey of teachers carried out by Green Generation and Eutopique, the consensus was that finding and engaging stakeholders, creating a safe working environment suitable for interaction, and planning activities to encourage active participation are often too complex to implement. Globally, teachers are not sufficiently trained in these subjects or in appropriate teaching methods. Although the majority of teachers recognize the importance of addressing climate change and its consequences, less than 40% feel confident enough to do so. What's more, only around a third feel able to adequately explain the impacts of climate change on a local scale. The study also highlights the fact that interactive pedagogical approaches, such as flipped learning, discovery learning and peer-to-peer teaching, are more effective than traditional methods in imparting knowledge and encouraging action, although they are not widely used in France and Europe. Against this backdrop, the Green Generations project aims to support European teachers and educators by developing an innovative guide and curriculum for climate change education, focusing on new approaches to learning.
