▶️ Time for our webinar #6! 𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙪𝙢 𝙍𝙪𝙨𝙝 𝙞𝙨 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙎𝙖𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙕𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙀𝙪𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘽𝙚𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙙 The so-called ‘critical’ raw minerals, such as lithium, are key to renewable energy technologies, but also IT, construction and military equipment. Current climate and energy policies are increasing their demand globally, leading to new forms of extractivism. This mineral rush raises challenges and questions about the socio-environmental impacts of (EU) policies, such as the Critical Raw Materials Act. ⛏️ At this webinar we will explore the global and local dimensions of lithium mining, who benefits and who is left behind. We will zoom in on GreenPaths’ case studies, focusing on their social, environmental and economic impacts. These researchers from Portugal, Serbia and Chile will share key insights and their views on (green) extractivism in (potential) sacrifice zones: - Mariana Riquito, Junior Researcher, CES / PhD candidate, University of Amsterdam - Nina Djukanović, PhD candidate, University of Oxford - Ramón Balcázar Morales, PhD candidate, Metropolitan Autonomous University The webinar will be moderated by Lindsey Wuisan (Resource Justice & New Economies campaigner, Friends of the Earth Europe). ✍🏻 Register here: https://lnkd.in/d4GGXixv 📅 5 March 2025 🕒 11:00 CET 📌 More info here: https://lnkd.in/d5MztRgX 🙏 Organised by CES | Centro de Estudos Sociais da Universidade de Coimbra #GreenPaths #webinars #JustTransition #Lithium #Extractivism #GreenColonialism #ClimateJustice Universidad de Cantabria Transnational Institute University of Amsterdam The International University College of Turin Oxfam Intermón Policy Lab Friends of the Earth Europe CES | Centro de Estudos Sociais da Universidade de Coimbra Universität Siegen IPE - Institute for Political Ecology Eating City #PravoNaGrad #ZAJEDNICKO #RISTECO Judith Clifton, Daniel Díaz-Fuentes, Dr. Thomas Kopp, Marcos Fernández Gutiérrez, Marija Bartl, Ana Lara Gómez, Ajda Pistotnik, Matilda Flemming, Yannick van den Berg 🟥, Daniel Chavez, Vedran Horvat, Giuseppe Mastruzzo, Maurizio Mariani, Marcus Erridge, José María Zavala Pérez

Today, we had a fruitful mid-term meeting of the GreenPaths Project, which explores the complex and multi-dimensional nature of a just and green transition in the European Union and beyond. An extremely interesting Hub has been designed, which is a knowledge platform that provides a variety of materials tailored for and by policymakers, researchers, academics, and members of civil society organisations. The GreenPaths Hub includes materials produced by the project as well as other resources produced by the project partners. It offers a 360º view of all your knowledge needs on green and just transitions. Have a look: https://lnkd.in/eEYuR_up GreenPaths is a three-year research project funded by the European Commission (Horizon Europe), carried by a consortium of 13 partners in 10 countries, of which the The International University College of Turin (IUC) is a component. Greenpaths has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the grant agreement No 101112305. Let’s make the EU Green Deal even greener! Perhaps, this motto would well describe the main goal of GreenPaths. But what does “”greener” mean? “Greener” means to understand that there cannot be any “green” without “just”. There is also a beautifully produced video that well explains or project: https://lnkd.in/ghYDEG9U

Calling for a #Gloral (Global + Moral) approach! President of the Eating City International Platform - Risteco and IUC Director Giuseppe Mastruzzo shared a thought-provoking message, urging to rethink food systems, finance, and global responsibility at the Urban School Food Alliance (USFA) 2025 winter meeting in San Antonio, TX. The tension between unregulated speculation and the safeguarding of commons is driving a crisis. While financial markets chase profit, hunger, inequality, and environmental degradation is surging — hunger should never be a speculative asset! Linking globalisation with ethics, equity, and sustainability in food systems is at the core of the #JustTransition promoted by the GreenPaths Project By promoting sustainable food practices and advocating for the health and wellness of US students, USFA demonstrates how food is not merely a private good, but part of an intricate balance between culture, agriculture, environmental protection and human health. Their work complements GreenPaths’ goal to foster sustainability and well-being across Europe and beyond. In fact, it reinforces GreenPaths’ underlying message — there is no environmental and social justice without a #Gloral approach to food systems. https://lnkd.in/drJiyAsj

▶️ New webinar upcoming! "Socio-economic consequences of the Just Transition: the coal phase-out case" A fundamental step towards decarbonization is the fossil fuel phase-out process. But to be in line with the UN Paris Climate Agreement European and OECD countries should be coal-power free by 2030 at the latest. And so called "#JustTransition" regulations may bring undesired consequences for different collectives in the communities where they are being implemented. Income reduction, inequality increase, unemployment, job quality deterioration, depopulation, breakdown of social fabric or cultural and identity crises are among the list of threats and challenges that these communities may face. The Green Paths Webinar "Socio-economic consequences of the Just Transition: The coal phase-out case" will feature these expert speakers: - Azahara Merino, Environmental Specialist, CCOO (Spanish Trade Union); - Kamila Svobodova, Associate Professor of Applied & Landscape Ecology, Czech University of Life Sciences; - Marie Claire Brisbois, Associate Professor of Energy Policy in the Science Policy Research Unit, University of Sussex 🙌 The webinar will be moderated by Alejandra Chávez T (Climate Justice and Just Energy Transition Advocacy Lead, Oxfam Intermón). Join us for a debate on the socioeconomic consequences of the closure of mining facilities and coal power plants, and the potential actions to be taken to mitigate these impacts! ✍🏻Register here: https://lnkd.in/dfEcZbC8 📅 25 February 2025 🕒 09:30 CET 📌More info here: https://lnkd.in/dycBkQJB 🙏 Organised by Oxfam Intermón #GreenPaths #webinars #JustTransition #GreenColonialism #ClimateJustice #CoalPhaseOut Universidad de Cantabria Transnational Institute UvA The International University College of Turin Oxfam Intermón Policy Lab Friends of the Earth Europe CES | Centro de Estudos Sociais da Universidade de Coimbra Universität Siegen IPE - Institute for Political Ecology Eating City #PravoNaGrad #ZAJEDNICKO #RISTECO Judith Clifton, Daniel Díaz-Fuentes, Dr. Thomas Kopp, Marcos Fernández Gutiérrez, Marija Bartl, Ana Lara Gómez, Ajda Pistotnik, Matilda Flemming, Yannick van den Berg 🟥, Daniel Chavez, Vedran Horvat, Giuseppe Mastruzzo, Maurizio Mariani, Marcus Erridge, José María Zavala Pérez.

🔎 Continuing from our previous post introducing the GreenPaths report… Which Horizon 2020 projects are linked to green transition and what is their research approach? 🍀 Our latest findings from the "Review Report on Previous Research Projects Linked to Green Transitions" highlight 18 Horizon 2020 projects that have shaped the understanding of just transitions using these methodologies: 💡Qualitative Approaches – Focus on stakeholder engagement, case studies, and participatory methods like interviews and workshops. 📊 Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) – Use quantitative and qualitative tools to assess economic, social, and environmental impacts across different scenarios. 📌Key Insight: Many projects focus heavily on qualitative methods, while fewer integrate IAMs. A hybrid approach, combining participatory research with quantitative policy modelling, could provide the most holistic impact assessment. The full report on the GreenPaths website includes links to all 18 projects reviewed.
