Training and supporting regenerative ocean farmers in the era of climate change.

About us

GreenWave trains and supports regenerative ocean farmers in the era of climate change. We work with coastal communities throughout North America to create a blue green economy—built and led by ocean farmers—that ensures we all make a living on a living planet. As a nonprofit, GreenWave’s 10 year goal is to provide training, tools, and support to a baseline of 10,000 regenerative ocean farmers to catalyze the planting of 1 million acres and yield meaningful economic and climate impacts. To date, GreenWave has trained and supported more than 120 farmers and hatchery technicians throughout New England, California, New York, the Pacific Northwest, and Alaska. With over 5,000 people waitlisted for our services, GreenWave works with farmers to launch and scale their businesses through a mix of training and innovation. Our high-and-low touch training ranges from an online seed-to-sale Ocean Farming Toolkit and region-specific workshops to hands-on internships and participation in our farmer support network. Our innovation program works to scale markets in four shovel-ready sectors - food, agriculture, bioplastics and Blue Carbon - as well as disseminate the latest farm, hatchery and blue tech design throughout our farmer network.

Fighting for Argentina’s Underwater Forests and Fishermen … Argentina’s kelp forests remain among the world’s most pristine, representing 30% of the current global total. However, in addition to warming waters, pollution, and disease, a surge of overharvesting of wild kelp is threatening local ecosystems and livelihoods in neighboring regions due to increasing global demand for kelp. In response to this crisis, Argentina-based grassroots marine conservation organization Por el Mar is working to safeguard these forests and find ways for the region to get ahead of the climate curve. Por el Mar is championing regenerative ocean farming as a sustainable alternative to wild harvesting while providing artisanal fishermen in the area with new economic opportunities. Last call for Kelp Climate Fund applications! • • • For Jonny Antoni, founder of Sea Quester Farms in Juneau, Alaska, GreenWave’s Kelp Climate Fund provides the opportunity to make critical farm infrastructure improvements. “Affording good equipment is crucial,” says Jonny. “Our first year we had to skimp on our anchors, and it bit us pretty hard.” Using KCF resources, Sea Quester Farms was able to double the amount of kelp seed they outplanted this season to 20,000 feet. “GreenWave is really investing in the farmers,” says Jonny. “Not only will we be able to develop a sustainable business, but we will also be able to develop an entire industry at an accelerated pace.” In Rhode Island, Azure Cygler, owner of Rhody Wild Sea Gardens, used KCF funds to help pay for barge repairs and buy new anchors for her planned farm expansion. “When we look at our well-being as farmers in America, as water workers, having just a little bit of financial burden lifted means you can think clearer, you can work with more joy, and you can see problems,” she says. • • • Active kelp farmers located in the U.S. or Canada with plans to outplant 1,000 or more feet of seedstring next farm season are invited to apply. Applications are due August 1, 2024.
